LUDLOW, Roger (Mr.), Deputy-Governor. [The sketch of Mr. Ludlow's life in our first edition was found among some manuscript notes relative to the carly his- tory of Connecticut Jurisprudence, written by THOMAS DAY, LL. D., which were kindly placed at our disposal by his son. Thomas Day, Esq., of Hartford. To this. in the present edition, we add (and distinguish by brackets, thus: [ ]) some most in- teresting details concerning Ludlow's family and early life, recently brought to light in Miss ELIZABETH H. SemexeK's Hist. of Fairfield, Conn .. of which, as of Windsor, he was a founder. ]

Mr. ROGER LUDLow, to whom pre-eminently belongs the honorable appellation of the " Father of Connecticut Jurisprudence," was a brother-in-law of Gov. John Endicott [having married the Gov.'s sister, probably after they came to America, as none of his children were of age when he left England]; a lawyer by profession. and resided in Dorchester, Eng. [lle was bap. at Dinton, England. ~ Mch., 1590 .* and was the third son of Thomas Ludlow and Jane, his wife, who was daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Pyle of Babton, Co. Wilts, Eng. He had an elder brother, Gabriel, who was adm. to the Inner Temple, London, 1610, then described as of Bul- leigh, Co. Somerset, who was made a barrister in 1620, and a Bencher, 1631. Ile also had a younger brother, George, who died in Virginia in 1655, leaving a bequest to his brother Gabriel's children, then in England, but the bulk of his property to Roger's children. The mother of Gabriel, Roger, and George, Jane Pyle, was a sis- ter of Sir Gabriel Pyle, Kt., and own aunt of Elizabeth Pyle, wife of Sir Francis Popham; so that Roger Ludlow was own consin to Sir Francis Popham (s. of Chief- Justice John and nephew of Sir George Popham), who continued his father's efforts

MR. ROGER LUDLOW.

to form a settlement on the coast of Maine, begun at Sagadaboc in 1607. Ludlow's father, Thomas, was uncle to Sir Henry Undlow, member from Wilts of the Long Parliament of 1640, and great-unele to Lieut .- Gen. Edmund Ludlow, the Regicide (who, in his Memoirx, mentions his cousin Roger), a great soldier and orator during the civil wars of England, and one of the strongest advocates in England for the liberties of the People as against the encroachments of the Crown, and who died in exile at Vevay, Switzerland, in 1693.

ROGER LUDLOW matriculated at Balliol College, Oxford, 16 June. 1610; was admitted to the Inner Temple, London, Nov., 1612, and was then described as the son of Thomas, then of Maiden Brailey; but he does not appear to have become a barrister. Allowing that he was admitted to the Temple at the age of 20, he must have been nearly forty years of age when he came to New England.]

Before leaving England he was chosen an assistant of the Massachusetts Bay Colony in the place of Samuel Sharp, and, on the 20th of March, 1630, embarked with Rev. Mr. Warham and his flock, at Plymouth, for America, in the Mary and John, which is mentioned as " Mr. Ludlow's vessel." Immediately upon his arrival he entered upon the discharge of his official duties as a member of the Court of As- sistants, which position he held for four years following. But, at a meeting of the Governor and Assistants at Boston, in 1632, it was mentioned that the people in- tended. at the next General Court, about to be held, to desire that the Assistants might be chosen anew every year. At this, Mr. Ludlow " thereupon thew into pas- sion, and said then we should have no government, continued stiff in his opinions, and though the matter was cleared to the satisfaction of the rest, protested he would then return to England " (Winthrop, i, 158). This incident is strikingly illustra- tive of Mr. Ludlow's temper and character, and is the more remarkable, inasmuch as the charter expressly provided that the Assistants and all other officers of the company should be, once in the year, forever thereafter, newly chosen for the year ensuing.
