MOSELEY (Maudsley, Maudsley). This revision (with the exception of bracketed por- tions) of this family compiled and furnished by Rev. G. S. DICKERMAN OF Amherst, Mass. The earlier spelling of the name was Mandaley. According to the MS. of Miss EMILY MOSELEY, deceased, of Glastonbury, Conn., for which we are indebted for many facts here given, " the latest use of this form in this region is on the mnon- umental table in the old graveyard in Glastonbury, Conn., erected in memory of Capt. Joseph Maudsley, in 1719. On a small slab near it is Modestey. The next to it is Moseley, and it has been so written since.
"JOHN MODESLEY, thus the ancient record reads, had two wives, Elizabeth and Cicely. He died in 1661, and his wife Cieely in the same year. They left a son and daughter who are named, in Cicely Moseley's will, John and Elizaluth. There was a son Thomas, by the first wife, who was the ancestor of a branch which settled in the vicinity of Boston."

[John (s. of John and Cicely above-named), bo't land in W., 1664, of Aaron Cook, then of Hadley, Mass .- the Cook place second N. of the Palizado - which he soul, 1677, to Joseph Whiting of Hartford, and rem. to Westfield, Mass., Init ret. to and owned a mill in Windsor, where he died 18 Aug. MUNSELL * (Mansel, Mansell, Mousell, Mousall, Moncil, Muncit, Mawusell, Mansel). The first mention of the name in connection with America, is that Sir Robert Man sell, with others, in 1610, signed a " letter of the King's Council for Virginia." for sending out supplies of men and provisions from England to that colony, which then included New England. The next mention is that of Robert Mansell, who emigrated on the ship Richard and Mary for New England, 21 June, 1679. There was a Jno. Monsell at Charlestown, Mass., 1675, who left issue. The Windsor fam. of Munsell descend from Thomas Munsell or Monsell of New London, Conn., 1681. when his name first occurs upon the record there. He was a resident, 1683, of the Great Neck, there. Whether he was related to any of the three above-named is not known; but it is quite possible that both Thomas and Jno, may have been related to Robert, who came from England, 1679 .- 1. 17.

FAM. 8. Jacob3 (Jacob," Thos 1), m. (1) Sarah Bancroft, 2 Jan., 1751. who died 28 NNov., 1783, æ. 55; (3) Sybil Ellsworth. At the time of the Revolution, Jacob Munsell was in the prime of life, and a thrifty farmer, residing in East Windsor. The requisitions of the army ealled into use every team that could be procured, and very high prices were paid for that service, especially after the communication with Boston harbor was interrupted by the British theet. He therefore frequently under took the transportation of provisions to the army lying in the neighborhood of Bos- ton. On one occasion, while thus employed, having arrived within a few miles of the camp at Cambridge, with a heavy load drawn by an ox team, in a part of the road which was particularly rough, and where the traveled path was narrow, he met two carriages, in each of which was an American general officer. The officer in the forward carriage, when near to Munsell, put his head out at the window. and called to him in an authoritative tone, " Damn you, get out of the path." Mun- sell immediately retorted, " Damm you, I won't get out of the path; get out your- self." After some vain attempts to prevail on him to turn out, the officer's carriage

turned out, and Munsell kept the path. The other carriage immediately came up, having beon within hearing distance of what had passed; and the officer within it put his head out at the window, and said to Munsell, " My friend, the road is bad, and it is difficult for me to turn out; will you be so good as to turn out, and let me pass?" " With all my heart, sir," said Munsell; "but I won't be damned out of the path by any man." This last officer was Gen. Washington. The writer of this anecdote, having heard the affair related at the time, inquired of Munsell soon after the close of the war as to the truth of it, and was told that it was exactly truc .- Conn.
