1. William. b. 2 July. 1832. There is an interest clue could be obtained from them by the anthor- ities of the city in regard to the paternity of the child. He was therefore placed in their orphan asylum. Subsequently to this, in 1441, Mr. Cowles of Scotland, Mas, being in want of a boy in his family, was recommended to this place, whither he went, and from whence he brought home this lad to his residence in Scotland. The facts in re- lation to the boy, so far as the transactions at Albany were concerned, came to the knowledge of the Rev. Dr. Cooley of Granville, Mass., who (hav- ing heard of the circumstances under which the child was lost), communicated the intelligence to Mr. Marvin, the grandfather of the boy, and. with- ont delay, made known the same to Mr. Filley, then in Connecticut. From the knowledge thus obtained, he (Mr. Filles) visited Mr. Cowles in Scotland, where the lad then resided; and, though somewhat changed by time and exposure, yet his appearance was a counterpart to other members of the family, and by a mark on his head, and a well- remembered scar on his hand, he was fully identitled. From the boy's story, it appears he had constantly lived in the same family, which consisted of 1 Ind- ians, Paul Pye and Phebe, his wife, with their dan. Martha, and Thos. Williams, who had adopted him as their son, he supposing himself an Indian boy. He had an indistinct recollection of attending school but when and where he knew not, but remembered he did not go to school with Indians. The first place he recollecte of having visited was Green Bay. In the summer they wandered back and forth through Michigan. New York, and sometimes visited Con- uretient: at one time eneamped several weeks in Stonington. In the winter they quartered in wig- wams, and fived on small game, such as skunk>, rabbits, and bull-frogs, the latter of which was to them a rich repart. Occasionally they made a few baskets, which they sent William to the nearest grocery to exchange for whisky. In all his wan- derings he traveled barefoot, summer and winter, suffering from cold, banger, and fatigue. ing incident connected with the life of this indi- vidual, that is worthy of a place in thi- genealo- gy. Ammi Filley, father of William, removed to Michigan when this boy was about a year old. mid located with his family in the town of Jack- son, then a wilderness, where, by industry and ronomy, he soon became the possessor of a good farm. Although surrounded by savage tribes, he had no fear, as they were apparently friendly. On the 3d of August, 1537, William, then a child of five years of age, went out to a swamp near by with a hired girl, to gather berries. The swamp was lxtween the house of Mr. Filley and the dwelling of Mr. Monut, the father of the girl. and where they were to spend the night. After picking berries for a time. William expressed a wish to go home, whereupon the girl led him to the road, and pointed out the way to Mr. Mimit's. which was in sight. But on the girl's arriving at the house, -he learned he had not been there. nor had he been to the house of his parents! Where- upon an alarm was immediately given, and the whole population commeneed a diligent search for the lost child. continuing it day and night for more than a week, but in vain. Finally, Mr. Filley began to suspect foul play by the Indians, and after making repeated inquiries of the differ- ent tribes and families in the vicinity, and mak- ing pecuniary offers to the chiefs and influential men. Mr. Filley himself traversed for months the wild- of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Jowa, withont success, and, returning to his family, gave him opa- lost. Time rolled on, but Withiam, though lost, was not forgotten, ull his mother. finally. through grief, sank into an untimely grave. After the death of his wife. Mr. Filley visited Conter ticut, his former home; and while here his long- lost child was providentially restored to him. It seems the lad, before reaching the house of Mr Monut, wa- overtaken and kidnapped by a party of Indians, who happened to pass that way, and was forced to accompany them in all their migra 2.
