The 2d son of Elizabeth Pinney and William P. Earle, Gen. FERDINAND P. EARLE of N. Y. city, was b. at Hartford, Conn., 11 Sept., 1839. and was quite a young man when he engaged in the hotel business with his father, whom he suecred- ed as proprietor and owner of Earle's Hotel. Subsequently he became proprietor of the mag- nificent Hotel Normandie, Broadway and 38th street, and also owner and proprietor of the Nor- mandie-by-the-Sea, Seabright, N. J., and the splendid new hotel, the " New Netherland, " 5th avenne and 50th street, in the immediate vicinity of Central Park. When this latter is completed and opened. Gen. Earle will be the proprietor of four of the leading hotels in this country. His military career hegan Oct. 23, 1862, when he en- listed as a private in Co. B. 7th Reg't. He was honorably discharged on Oct. 29, 1869. On Aph. 5, 1881, Mr. Earle was unanimously elected cap- tain of the Second Battery, N. G. S. N. Y. His Excellency, Governor David B. Hill, app. him on his staff to represent the Artillery Branch in the State Service, with the rauk of Brig .- Gen., and he was reappointed by Gov. Roswell P. Flower.


Brig .- Gen. Earle has been connected with the Na- tional Guard for nearly thirty years; is also a mem- ber of the Veteran Association, 7th Reg't. N. G. S. N. Y .; a member of the "OLD GUARD." Now York, and has been prominent in bringing before the public of New York the idea of a Naval Re- serve, or State Naval Militia. He was the founder of "The Earle Guild " for the relief of the poor and needy, and is connected with the following: New York Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, director New York Board of Trade and Transportation, director of the Plaza Bank, member of Chamber of Commerce, member Sov- enth Regiment Veteran ('Inb (one of the Govern- ors), Manhattan Club, Manhattan Athletic ('Inb. The Democratic Club of the City of New York, The Colonial Club of New York, Reform Club, l'nited Service Club, Canteen Club, memb. Amer- ican Yacht Club, Jerome Park Club, Coney Island Jockey ('Inb, New York Jockey Club, Vice-Com- modore Cherry Diamond Yacht Club, Business Men's Democratie Association, life-member New England Society, American Geographical Society, Naval Reserve Association State of New York, Monmonth Park Association. In early life he en gaged in bus. at Richmond, Va. ; then was of the firm of Hitchcock & Pinney of Hart- ford, Conn .; in comparatively early life retired from bus. to a farm in So. W., and during his long residence there held many offices of honor and trust, in all of which he discharged his duties with fidelity. He was the first rep. from So. W. to the Leg., after town's incorporation; Probate Judge for several years; enjoyed the utmost respect of his fellow townsmen, who will long remember his kind, genial face, his quiet, gentlemanty manner, and his open-handed generosity. He had been (in 1876) a Free Mason for more than 60 years, and his funeral was largely attended by " the craft." He was of studious habits, a great reader, and his remarkably retentive memory enabled him to repeat large extracts from his favorite authors and from the Bible. He was eminently a leading citizen, a helpful friend, an affectionate kinsman. Children :
