BURNHAM (Burnam). (This revision is indebted to the Gomat. Record of Thomas Burnham, the Emigrant, etc., -Second Edition, by Roderick I. Burnham of Hart. ford, published since our first edition was published, viz., in 1884.)

Thomas, born in England in 1617 (descended from the Burnhams of Herefordshire,

England), was an educated man and lawyer -a man of determined character and energetic in business and public matters, He appears at Hartford about 1641/8, and in 1659 he purchased from Tantonimo, "the one-eyed chief " sachem of the Podunks a tract of land now covered by the towns of South Windsor and East Hartford, on which he resided, and a part of which is still in the possession of his descendants. He was a large landhohler in the Colony, his house at Podunk being one of the tive on the east side of Connecticut River. This was fortified and garri- soned during the Indian War of 1615. His legal career was summarily closed by the court in 1662 on account of his successful defense, as attorney, of Abigail Betts, charged with blasphemy, wherein, though he " saved her neck," he was himself condemned to " y" prison-krep," but he defended himself so strongly and shrewdly, demanding " justice according to Law," and declaring himself to be "a Subject and Denason of England," that the sentence was not carried into effect, and he was merely deprived for a time of his citizenship and debarred from acting as an attorney for others in the court, though allowed to argue his own cases. Ile was readmitted to citizenship, 1665, aml among W. freemen, 1669. He m. Anna Wight, b. in England, and d. 28 June, 1688, w. 71; she d. 5 Aug., 1503. He had nine children.
