THE ELLSWORTH FAMILY.

FAM. 91. James William " (Edgar B .; Elisha," John. Those. Thox.3 Thos,,? .Josias 1), mi. 4 Nov., 1874, Eva Frances (dau. Oliver M. and Reform C. Willard) Butler, b. 16 July, 1852, who d. 3 Nov., 1888: res. Chicago, 11]. JAMES WILLIAM ELLSWORTH was born at Hudson, Summit Co., Ohio, October 13, 1849. His mother, Mary II. Dawes, is a daughter of Judge Dawes of Maine, and the early associations of her husband, Edgar B. Ellsworth, and herself on the Western Reserve with the New England ideals and spirit, had much to do in forming the character of their son. James W. Ellsworth grew to youthful manhood in an atmosphere character- istic and vitalizing. His father was an earnest Republican, and the Western Re- serve was the battle ground of discussion on which ideas of liberty were sure to have supremacy. His mother constantly held before him the true conception and value of life and life's privileges of culture. As a boy it was his dream to gather about him the ministries of books and pictures that his business career might serve the higher end of education and character. Hardly out of his youth he began his

career in Chieago. A partnership followed upon his industry and success, as, at length a large business in mines and coal came to demand his time. His education at Hudson in the preparatory school of Western Reserve College, had only stimu- lated desire. Thrown upon his own resources, and in the ardent pursuit of his tasks as a business man in the large and growing West, he still found time for the cultivation of his artistic tastes. A marriage with Miss Eva F. Butler brought him affection, ennobling associations, and a still more quick desire for the true and beautiful. Mrs. Ellsworth died in 1888, leaving him and their two children a precious influence. His public spirit has manifested itself in his labors as one of the South Park Commissioners, as an early friend and patron of the Art Institute. as president of the Inter-State Exposition and as one of the directors of the World's Columbian Exposition. He was one of the founders of the Union League Club. Mr. Ellsworth has collected many choice specimens of art in sculpture, pottery, and coins. His private library, distinguished as it is by the presence of many unique specimens, above all the " Gutenberg Bible," is only cqualed by his collee- tion of paintings, the chief and consummate canvas being a well-known portrait by Rembrandt.
