In November, 1835, he became a " law clerk " in the office of Walter Edward, on Wall street, with a salary of one hundred dollars a year. In 1838 he was an at- torney and counselor-at-law, and entered the field of professional competition. Be- ing married and having no particular patronage, the struggle at times was trying, financially, but, by 1844, he had more than a fair living business. In November,

1844, he was elected to the New York Assembly, session of 1815. This took him from his professional business for five months, and nearly wrecked it, though it was left in care of a competent lawyer. A few years of renewed effort more than re- stored it, and thenceforth he prospered. But the time came when he found the re- quirements of his profession too exacting, and having gradually put them off, in 1882 he retired.
The foregoing sketch would be incomplete withont the mention of other facts: In 1837, '38, and '40, respectively, he was commissioned First Lieutenant, Captain, and Lieut .- Colonel in the 261th Regiment, 61th Brigade, New York State Infantry. In November, 18.12, he was commissioned Brigadier General to that brigade. While a strict disciplinarian, his election to each of these offices was unanimous. As an officer, he found pleasant and wholesome recreation from professional confinement and labors.
His sympathetic nature early associated him with humane and charitable insti- tutions, of which are the Prison Association, the Association for Improving the Condition of the Poor, the Sanitary Association, with each of which he held official relations. Medical charities have particularly interested him. Ile initiated, and for more than twenty-five years was the president of, the Demilt Dispensary. He actively co operated in the initiation and organization of two other dispensaries, viz., the Northeastern and the Northwestern. He is a life member of each of these three institutions. He was also one of the original corporators, trustees, and organizers of the Roosevelt Hospital. Other institutions of charity have been aided by his ser- vices, and otherwise. In 1872 he visited hospitals and dispensaries in Great Brit- ain and on the Continent, some results of which are embodied in the 25th Annual Report of the Demilt Dispensary.
He was one of the originators of the N. Y. Yale Alumni Association, and par- tiripated in the formation of the Yale Law School Alumni Association; also in that of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York. He is a member of the American Geographical Society, and life member of the N. Y. State Agricultural Society and the New England Society, and honorary member of the N. Y. Mercan- tile Library Association.
Hle long served as director of the Eighth Avenue Railroad Company; also as director, and for ten years as president, of the Richmond County Gas Light Com- pany, Staten Island.
In 1845 he served in the State Legislature, and in 1855 and '56 in the New York Vity Common Council. For many years as Inspector, and other years as Trustee. he was given all requisite care and supervision of the public schools of New York city. To these offices he was elected from term to term.
Nor has he forgotten the place of his birth and boyhood, and matters there have received his aid; The old historie burying-place of Windsor has interested him from his earlier years. He has caused the inscriptions on some eminent monu. ments to be re-ent, and bas erected two granite monuments to replace perishing marble structures. In 1889 he prepared and advocated, and the General Assembly of Connecticut enacted, a law for the care and preservation of that cemetery, its lots and monuments. He has striven to put that law into efficient operation, and has subscribed liberally to the Cemetery Trust Fund.
With well-defined religions and political convictions, and fearless to avow and defend them when assailed, Gen. Mather is neither obtrusive nor intolerant, and all of his political offices have been conferred by independent, non-partisan suffrages.

MILLS. [We have been largely assisted in this revision by Mr. TIMOTHY DRAKE of Hartford, Conn. The facts as to the trans-Atlantic origin of this family, as well as much of the information relative to the New Haven and Fairfield Co. families were obtained from Mrs. AURELIA D. WYNKOOP, dau. of Judge Isaac Mills of N. Haven, Conn., to whom also we are indebted for the engraving of the correct coat of-arms of the fam. (as granted to Sir Peter Van der Meulen), the result of personal investi- gation in Holland. Where no pl. of res, is given, they may be supposed to be of the N. Il. or Fairfield Co. families. We have added many dates, etc., from W. C. R. and other sources .- II. R. S.
