When seventeen years old he enlisted in the service of the country, took the camp fever, which left him with one ley disabled for several years, during which he worked as a tailor; but, on recovering, he began farming and continued it through life. He spent many years in the service of the late Solomon Rockwell of Winsted, taking the entire charge of his farin, and managing it as faithfully as if working for himself. Hle was so much troubled with asthma for many years that he could not sleep in a hed. buit took his rest in a chair, and often spent much of the night in labor. While a little creentric, he was entirely honest and a great lover of justice, but inclined to punish his own faults with great severity One night he failed to fasten the barn door properly, and the next night he fastened it open and spent the cold winter night sitting in the open door. He once walked to Litchfield. fourteen miles, and. 10 favor a neighbor, undertook to deliver a letter there; but, on his return, when four miles from lume. found the letter still in his pocket, and, to punish himself for neglect, returned at once, delivered the letter, and walked home before he slept.

Alarm, Apl., 1275, then a .. 27, as a Lient, of militia: upon the org. of the continental Army at Cambridge, Mass, in July of that year, he was app. Lient. in the Continental Army; served actively during the whole Revol, War, ending with the commission of captain; he moved in 1290, to Westmoreland Co., l'a, settling near Greensburgh on the Monongahela river, 20 miles above Pittsburgh: m. (2) 4 Mch., 1793, with Mrs. Rachel Kelly, a widow, They moved in Apl., 1799. to the Northwest Territory, and settled at Fawcettstown, now Liverpool, Columbiana do. Ohio, 15 miles below Pittsburgh, Pa., and 2 miles below the line of Pemsylvania. Again, in 1804, they moved 40 miles to the present town of Deerfield, Portage Co. O., wh. she d. 10 Apl., 1805. leaving the old soldier with a large family and but seanty means of support. The family was broken up and scattered. In 1511 he moved to Maysville, Ky., and d. there in the family of his s. Peter, 14 Feb., 1819. a. N.
235 ii. Peter Grant, 6 b. at Coventry; a mariner: was lost at sea; um'd; a great wag, full of jokes and odiel tricks. He lived for some time at E. W. with his great miele Ebenezer Grant, who sent him, with an Irishinan named Carahan, to haul some empty hogsheads from the wharf to the storehouse As they were loading a shower came up, and Carahan, disliking to get wet, was persuaded to get into one of the logsheads to keep dry. On the way they had to rise a steep hill, and, while Peter was sitting on the tongue of the eart, the body suddenly tilted, letting the hogshead> roll to the bottom of the hill, with poor Carahan in one of them.

[Maj. Grant, on coming into possession of the paternal estate, found it in an embarrassed condition. His father, Capt. Howwell, a man of genial manners, strong social instincts, and largely occupied by public duties which invited expense and Jaxity of attention to his own affairs, had left a good estate badly enenmbered with debts. Major Grant assumed these obligations, pledged himself to support hi- parents, and undertook the redemption of a property that otherwise would have passed to stranger- To this work of love be brought to bear a comprehensive intellect, and improved the estate until it passed into the bands of his heir- as one of the finest of the many beautiful farms of this wondrously fertile valley. De embodied his beliefs in his life. Dis bodily infirmities were few, and no mental weakness impaired the rare companionship of bis declining years. The politician or antiquarian coult find no more agreenble companion with whom to travel the ways of our earlier political and social life than Major tirant. He nided an uousually clear mind with the results of much laborious reading and years of thoughtful observation. A severe and protracted di-case of the eye- early in manhood nearly permanently unpaired hi- vision and rendered the study of books a task through life; yet few of the great questions that affected the European or American politics of his generation were left by him unconsidered.
In private life Mr. Grant supported a comfortable style and maintained a beautiful old-school hos. pitality. Few men could receive a guest with greater dignity and more assuring manners than he. His " your servant, sir," was the very epitome of graceful urbanity, and at the board or about the hearth his conversation charmed and instructed.
