IIon. EDWARD OLIVER WOLCOTT, now (1893) represents the State of Colorado in the United States Senate. He was educated at the Norwich (Conn.) Academy, the Cleveland High Sch., Yale Coll., and Harv. Law Sch., where he grad. LL. B. in 1875, and afterwards continued his law studies in the office of C. T. & T. H. Russell, in Boston. At the age of 16, there being an urgent call for volunteers for the tempo- rary defense of Washington, he enlisted in a company of young men recruited for that special duty; when the need passed these troops were discharged and Mr. Wolcott returned to his studies. In 1871 he went to Colorado, whither his elder brother had preceded him. Between these two brothers there has always been an unusual brotherly devotion. He first opened an office in Georgetown, Clear Creek Co. In 1876, he was elected to the office of prosecuting attorney for the First Judi- cial District, comprising the counties of Gilpin, Clear Creek, Jefferson, and Boulder. Thenceforward his rise at the bar, and in the political affairs of the State as a mem- ber of the Republican party, was almost phenomenally rapid. Some time before the expiration of his term he had accomplished the unprecedented feat of clearing the dockets of the district of all criminal cases that could be disposed of, and in a man- ner to compel the admiration of courts, lawyers, and juries. It was then that he first established his reputation for eloquence and force in both civil and criminal cases. Some of the speeches he then made were among the most effective he has ever delivered. It was the beginning of his celebrity as a speaker, the initial epoch as well of his political career. Having executed his mission as District Attorney to the entire satisfaction of all, save the class upon whom he had closed the doors of the State penitentiary, he resigned and in 1878 was elected to the State Senate and at once hecame the leading figure in that assembly. Here, again, his ability as an orator, no less than as a law-giver, became widely recognized through a number of masterly addresses. In 1879 he was made attorney of the Denver & Rio Grande Railway. This occasioned his removal from Georgetown to Denver, where, in ad- dition to railway business, a large general practice came to him. In 1881, when the Rio Grande Company was reorganized he was elected General Counsel, a posi- tion which he still retains.

His first active engagement in State politics was in the legislative session of 1879, where his force as a speaker and director of combinations was eminently dis played, and where he exerted great influence in the election of Ilon. N. P. Ilill to the Senate of the United States. In 1889 the General Assembly was largely Repub- lican in both branches; when a canvass of that party was held for the purpose of

nominating a Senator, Mr. Wolcott was nominated on the first ballot, and when the Assembly met in joint convention, he was elected by a very large majority.

In personal appearance, manner, and bearing, Senator Wolcott is one of the most fascinating of men. Young, fresh, vigorous, with an extremely attractive face, broadly informed, an ardent lover of literature and art, polished and refined, a royal entertainer, he has won as great admiration in the higher society of the national eapital by these qualities, as by his brilliancy in oratory. He is candid and outspoken, employing no subterfuges, going direct to the point, proceeding in all things upon the line of action that he conceives to be the right one, and calinly accepting the consequences. In most of his ruling characteristics he is so unlike other men of our day as to be wholly exceptional, a figure standing by itself, an extraordinary exemplitication of traits that exert a wonderful influence upon all with whom he may be associated. In popular oratory he is unexcelled. His delivery is so rapid, fervent, and sweeping, as to compel the applause of his audi- tors - so charming in rhetorical finish, so fascinating as to enforce admiration. As a lawyer his practice is very large and luerative. It is too early to review his career as a Senator and politician, for it is but recently entered upon. Yet much may be said, that although among the youngest in years and in experience of statesman- ship, he has already risen to an enviable position in the United States Senate. Ilis record thus far has been alniost meteoric, filled with swiftly consummated aims that have led to fortune and eminent reputation.

GENEALOGIES AND BIOGRAPHIES OF ANCIENT WINDSOR.

Addenda. - The very remarkable study of heredity, ability, and talents displayed in publie and professional life by the descendants of Ursula (dan. Gov. Roger) Wolcott and her husband, Matthew Griswold, which was promised (p. 350) as an Apren- dir to this Genealogy, cannot well be given here, on account of the size to which this work has already grown. It will be found, however, in the Mag. of An rican Ilistory, for March, 1851, pp. 234-237, and is from the pen of Mrs. EDWARD E. SALISBURY, herself a descendant. The list comprises no less than tirelee governors, thirty-six high judges (most of them distinct from the governors), and a galaxy of men eminent in other professions.

As we are reading the proof of this page we learn that the gubernatorial prestige - of the family of Wolcott has been maintained in this year of grace, 1892, by the election of ROGER WOLCOTT, Esq., of Boston, as Lieutenant-Governor of the Com- monwealth of Massachusetts. This gentleman, who has manifested a most lively interest in this Windsor History (see p. 798), is the son of Joshua Huntington, x. of Frederick W., s. Gov. Oliver, &. Gov. Roger, s. Simon, x. MIr. Henry Wolcott, the emigrant. He is a grad. of Harv. Univ., is a member of the Mass. Bar, and m. a gd .- dau. of Win. II.
