William, Jr., and his Ist wife Janet .Archibald) Thompson of No. Bridgewater, h. at MinkIleborough, Mass., 10 Aug., 1749. He was a chedhier at E. W., and built a dam across Ketch Brook, where the Thompsonville carpet factories are now. Hr was killed in a skirmish bet. Tory dragoons and Conn. troops, 20 May, 1780, dur- ing Arnold's invasion of the Conn, coast. Sgt. Fox raised a company of militia and went to Gen. Putnam's aid, and was surrounded (in a brick schoolhouse) by a su- perior force. They fought until their ammunition gave out, then sought safety in flight across a fiekl, pursued by the dragoons. Fox was among the last to leave, and was overtaken as he was getting over a fence, and decapitated by a blow from an English broadsword. One other of his party was killed in this skirmish, and six of the dragoons-all were buried in one grave - which Sgt. Fox's son (Capt. Jabez) visited 40 yrs. later.
