Joseph Wood.t
In Arthur's Etypological Dictionary of Family Surnames, 1857, it is said, "AYLS- WORTH: the name admits of several meanings, Eal, Saxon, finished, completed, and worth a farm-house or village. Ayles, Cor. Br .. low meadow, flat-lands, washed by a river, sea, or lake, and gwerth, a worth, farm-house, or village.
Worth, any sufficiently warded place, it came to denote a small farmstead. The

Rov. GEORGE 1. Woon of Ell., kindly adds an auredotal sketch of the distinguished jurist. The labors of the late EDWARD KING of Indianapolis, Ind., have most largely contributed to the completeness of this genealogy, especially in the Western lines of descent; and FREDERICK ELLSWORTH of Hartford, Conn .. ha- rendered aid in regard to the E. THE ELLSWORTH FAMILY.
primary sense of the word is strength ( Webster). Elsworth, it is known historieally is homogenous with Aylesworth, in which the first syllable is either a transposed form of Eyles (an old spelling of Elias) or an abbreviation of Aylmer, Elmeric, with the possessive s added. Or, noting that the English town of Aylesbury was origin- aily spelt Eglesbyrig, we may reasonably conelude that Ayl, and sometimes El, is a contraetion of Eigil, one of the gods of Norse mythology - Sigil, the hero-archer. -Prof. Charles Dod in Home Journal.
Josias, or JOSIAH ELLSWORTH, son of John, is said to have been a descendant of Sir John Ellsworth, of the time of Edward the Third, who resided in Cambridgeshire, England. Hon. Joseph Wood's MS. supposes Josias to have been of Yorkshire. This conjecture is "derived from Mr. John Ellsworth, who was a respectable mer- chant in London at the beginning of the present eentury, and who stated that it was a tradition in his family which had long resided in Yorkshire, that a member of it had formerly removed to foreign parts; that he was a young man when he left, and had never returned." This statement concurs with that in the MS. Notes of Oliver Ellsworth, Jr., on the Ellsworth Family, written in 1802, to the effect that his father, the Chief Justice, while abroad on his diplomatic mission, made some researches concerning the origin of the family. In Dorchester, whence most of the Windsor people came, he found none of the name. In London he found two John Ellsworths, both respectable merchants, one of whom, a rich cheesemonger, claimed a relationship with the Chief Justice, on the strength of a tradition of ancient date, handed down to him by his father, "that one of the brothers of this John Ellsworth's great grandfather had removed or gone to foreign parts and never returned," and though this young man's Christian name was not recollected, the Justice was inclined to believe that it was his ancestor, Josias.
From records in London he ascertained that Sir Richard Ellsworth had been, in 1672, a privy counsellor to Charles IJ, and a resident of Bristol; also that the fam- ily of E. were quite numerous in Yorkshire, about fifty miles north of Cambridge; and that nine miles east of C. there was a small village called Elsworth (or Eels- worth), whence the said John Elsworth of London said he had come; and that his aneestors in Yorkshire, for several generations, were good livers but not distin- guished. The Justice visited this village, which was of ancient appearance, with a very venerable church, and through the village ran a small river which probably gave origin to the family name : "worth," the last syllable in the name, is of Saxon origin, and signified a ford or fording-place. The first syllable of the name Els, or Eels (probably, also, a Saxon name) had its present meaning and the fact that the country around this village is low and flat, particularly about the town of Ely, which is likewise in the neighborhood of Cambridge; and there are many fens or watery spots "where it appears, by an old English geography, that there is an abundance of eels and fish, whence it is thought that Ely (town) takes its name "- renders it probable that the "Eels-fording place " gave rise to the name of the vil- lage, and also of its principal family.
In the Appendix of the Register of the Aylesworth Family, by Sylvester Aylesworth,* a pamphlet of twelve pages, published at Utica, N. Y., in 1840, mention is made of three brothers, who left Wales because of religious persecutions. The eldest, THEOPHILUS, fled to Holland, and spelled the name Elsvort, or Elswort, after the Dutch pronunciation. Ile afterwards, about 1664, came to America, and settled in New York city, where many of his descendants lived, as late as 1840. In 1670 the persecutions were renewed, and the second brother, Jostas, came to America and settled in Connecticut. His descendants spelled the name Ellsworth, and the author says "to that family belonged Chief Justice Oliver Ellsworth," etc.
* This work, above referred to, gives but one line of the family, without dates, for four generations, ex- cept in the family of William, of the 4th generation.

GENEALOGIES AND BIOGRAPHIES OF ANCIENT WINDSOR.
But, unfortunately for this last conclusion, the ancestor of the Windsor Ells- worths had been many years in that place before 1640. The third brother, ARTHUR, came to America about 1681, and settled in North Kingston, R. I. An extensive genealogy of his descendants has been published, entitled, Irthar lylsworth und Hlix Descendants in America, with Notes Hist. and Gencal., relating to the Family, from Early English Records. By Horace Elhanan ylsworth, M.D., Roseville, Warren Co., Ill. Edited by James N. Arnold, Editor of Narragansett Hist. Regis- ter. Printed by the Family. Edition 250 copies. Providence, R. I., 1887, exxxvi, of Index, 496.
This includes a reprint of the twelve-page pamphlet entitled, "A Register of the Aylsworth Family, issued at Utica, N. Y., 1840, by Sylvester Aylesworth, before referred to. But the compiler of the later work does not agree with the conclusions of Mr. Sylvester Aylesworth, as to the three emigrant brothers: (1) as to the rer- tainty of their Welsh origin; (2) as to the name of the eldest brother, which should be Christopher, instead of Theophilus, and he is found in New Netherlands'as early as 1653, and his eldest child, b. 1656; (3) as to the identity of the second brother, with Josia of Windsor; and (4) as to the alleged dates of emigration of both the older brothers.
Josias (Sgt.), was born in 1629. Hinman (1st Series, p. 26) says he was in Connecti- cut in 1646, a statement which is, however, totally ignored by Savage, in bis Gene- alogical Diet. of New Eng. His name first appears on the W. Tien Rec. in connec- tion with his marriage, 16 Nov., 1654, to Elizabeth Holcomb; and, the same year, he bo't a house and lot S. of the Rivulet (and near the Old Mill) on what was afterwards known as the Gillett pl., opp. res. of late llon.
