BISSELL (Bysselb. [The genealogy of this family in the first edition of this work was mainly by Rev. Chunks Il Bissena,, then of E. W. Hil; the Litchtichl branch was furnished by Dea. I. B BisSELL of Litchfield. In this revision we have been indebted to the labors of Jons G. Bissett, of Rome. N. Y., and Miss ELVIRA C. Cover of E. W. Hill.
It is somewhat probable that this family is of Huguenot origin, many of whom theal to England to escape fim perseentions which followed the massacre of St. Bar. tholoniew. 1522 The family in England is but little known, and has but one roat- of arms, which is of a religious, rather than a warlike, character, and is thus de. scribed in Back's Complete Jemery : "Bissel, Gru., on a bend, or : three escal- lopes, x. C'est, a demi eagle, with wings displayed, s .; charged on the neck with an "scallop shell, or Molto, ' In recto theus'- In rectitude. Honor."
The family of Jons, who came to Windsor, is the only one of the name known to lave come to this country Tradition asserts that this Joux, with a brother Thomas, came from Co Somerset, Eng., to Plymouth, Mass, 1625, and that the latter died at Plymouth, or ret. to Eng., which is doubtful; as also is the tradition

THE BISSELL FAMILY.
that Thomas m. an Imliau girl, dan, of the Poquonnoe sachem, and died without issue, - probably a mixed version of a similar trad. concerning Thos,, son of John. John, the founder of the W. line of Bissells, sett. at. W. before 1640 see pp. 152, 540, 514, Vol. 1.); rec'd 1648'or '49, a grant from the Col. Ct., of the monopoly of a ferry across the Conn. River, located on the E. side, near the wharf belonging to the Quarry ('o.,- " the road on E. side of the Coun. River leading from it followed the present road E. to the foot of the hill, thence a N. easterly course up the hill across the farm known as the George Prior farm, where the road now has the appearance of being very ancient." -(Maj. Sam'l W. Bartlett, in Golden Wedding of John Bixse I. und Elizabeth. Thompson, 1870).
Evidences seem to point to the fact that Bissell had built on the east side of the river as early as 1659-60. In 1662, he gave his homestead with the ferry in Ohl W. to his son dohm, and rem. with his son Nathaniel to the east side, below the mouth of the Seantie; being, probably, the first family to actually reside on the east side " There had been cellars and honses earlier, and in 1648 William Hills sohl a . dwell- house, barn, and appurtenances,' but these had probably only been occupied by la- borers who cultivated these meadows, most of the hay being put in 'ricks' (hay starks) and drawn to the west side on the ice, in winter." -J. Il. Hayden. This- teen years later (King Philip's War) the Bissells had neighbors and their house was Fortified and garrisoned, as was Thos. Burnham's at Podunk, 3 or 4 miles below. John, Jr .. asked, in 1663, to be released from his ferry contract, which was granted on condition that some one could be found to take his place. Perhaps, from that time, the location of the ferry was rem, down to the mouth of the Seantic; but ver- tainly, as early as 18677, Nathaniel B. was ferryman there, and the ferry was still known as Bissell's Ferry. The landing on the E. side was changed to the south side of the Scantie nearly a century ago. John, Jr. d. at the homestead in W., 1693, and was succeeded there by his son Daniel. b. 1663; " he by his s. Daniel, b. 1694; he by his son Daniel, who remained on the homestead until 1990, when he removed to Randolph, Vt., the old house being sold to Jacob Osborne, who rem. it to another part of the town. The whole of the original John Bissell home lot in Old Windsor is now (1891) under a high state of cultivation, and owned and occu- pied by Messrs. Henry and Stephen Hills; and their house, created by Josiah Bis- sell, about 1800, stands about 20 rods north of the site of the original John Bissell house." -J. 11. Hayden.
