In 1827 he grad. from Andover Theol. Sem., and the same year at New York he undertook an agency for the Am. Bible Soc'y, and is described by the sec- retary of the Soc'y at this time, as " yonng, ardent, active, full of cheerful, and at times mirthful, conversation, yet blended with frankness and good nature, and all so obviously devoted to the interests of religion as to render him an agrecable com- panion and a promising minister." He was in the employ of the Soc'y until 1 30, in the autumn of which year he was ordained as a Presb. minister, and for three and a half years ministered to the Presb. Ch. in Fayetteville, N. C. In 1831 he was installed as pastor of the Pearl Street Ch., N. Y. city, where he labored with great diligence until May, 1843, when he commenced a ministry at lonesdale, Pa., where he remained for over twelve yrs., and this place was the scene of most of his literary labors. In 1850 he pub. an Svo vol. of about 300 pp., On the Common Vor- ims of Infidelity; in 1851 a duodecimo vol. of 180 pp., entitled The Path of Life. of which a second revised edition was soon issued; in 1851 another 12mo vol., Light in a Dark _Alley: in 1854, a larger work, The Way of Pure. Only two of his ser- mons were published while in New York, viz .: a Fourth of July sermon in 1840, and the funeral sermon of Rev. David R. Downer, 1841. While resident at lones- dale, Pa., sermons of Dr. Rowland were issued in pamphlet form, on the following

topics: The Distinctive Features of Presbyterianism, as Exhibited in the Confession of Fuith, 1844; The Characteristics of a Pious Woman's Hart - a sermon preached at the dedication of the lecture room of the Presb. ch, at HI., 1848; The Murderer and his Fate, 1848; Christian Liberty, 1850; The True Principle of Christian Unity, 1850; The Erallency of a Christian Policy, 1851; An Essay (which had previously been pub. in the newspapers) on the Church and Slavery, 1851. He was a frequent con- tributor to the newspaper press, which he considered too powerful an influence to be neglected. A fellow-clergyman says of him, after a visit to him at Honesdale: " I could not but admire the many marks of his activity and usefulness, both in his congregation and among the people generally. Ile seems to be acquainted with everybody, rich and poor, ohil and young, on terms of cordial friendship with all, and ready to promote their best interests in every way." In July, 1854, Union Coll. conferred upon him the degree of D.D., and 23 Jan., 1856, he was installed pastor of the Park Church, Newark, N. J., where he remained until his death, 14 Sept., 1859 .* Dr. R. m. 1833, Harriet (dau, Isaac) Hyer of N. Y. city, who still (1892) survives. Children :
1. Henry A. (Prof.), b, at Honesdale, Pa., 27 Nov .. 1818; grad. Rensselaer Polytechnic Instit., 18:0, as a civ. eng'r; the next year found him R. R. sur- veying in Western New York, but his ability as a teacher was already recognized und his services were called into requisition at Wooster Univer- sity. In 1872 he returned to Rensselaer a- instruc- tor in physics; assist. prof. in same, 1872-'5; stud- ied in Germany, 18:5-6; Prof, of Physics Johns Hopkins Univ,, Baltimore, Md., 1426; made .\s- Bociate Fellow of Amber. Acad, of Science-, 1876; the well-earned deg,of Ph. D. was conferred upon Prof. Rowland by Johns Hopkins t'niv. in 1850). As member of the Electrical Congress at Paris, in 1881, and of the jury at the Electrical Exhibi- tion at the same time and place, he received the Order of a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor; rec'd grand prize of Venice Aend. Sciences, 1881; U. S. Commissioner to International Electrical Congress, Paris, 1881: was elected a member of the Nat'l Acad. Sciences, Fame yr. In 1853 he presided over the Physics Section of the Amer. Asso'n for the Advancement of Science, at Min- neapolis, and read a memorable address, entitled, "A Plea for Pure Science." Was one of the 12 hon. memb. London Physical Sor'y, 1854; honor- ary member Cambridge (Eng.) Philosophical Soc., 1884; corresponding member of British As- sociation. In 1×44, being appointed by govern- meat on the commission specially formed for the purpose, he presided over the deliberations of the Nat'l Conference of Electricians at Philadelphia, and delivered an address of decided scientific interest and valne. During the same yr. be rec'd from the American Acad. of Arts and Sciences, of which he is an associate, the Rumford medal for researches in light and heat; foreign men- ber Royal Society of Gt. Britain, 18000; received the grand prize and gold medal at Paris Exposi- tion, 1890, for gratings, and a photographic map of the polar spectrum : Draper medal, 1800,
The Electrical World says that "when he had completed his now widely-known. experiments on magnetic permeability, at first he was unable to get them published. Scientific journals in Amer- iea rejected his work, but, confident of its value, he rent his results to Clerk Maxwell, who at once had them published in the Philosophient Maga- zine, and wrote kindly and encour ging letters to the young investigator. He was now becom- ing known, and when the authorities of the new. ly-founded Johns Hopkins University, at Balti- more, cost about them for some one to fill the chair of physics and become director of the phys- ical laboratory. Rowland, with his already-rec- ognized ability, and with the countenance which Maxwell's recognition of his talent- gave, was chosen for the place, Prof. Rowland accepted the chair, which he still holds with credit to him- self and with great honor to a university that he has since then done so much toward making the
great sent of American learning, and the true home and samnetnary of science that we all know it to be. This was a year before the l'oiversity actually opened, and the interval he spent in Eu- rope, working in Berlin with Helmholtz. Here he investigated the effect of static electricity in mo- tion, and proved that a moving charge has the effect of n current. While the energies of Prof. Rowland have been largely devoted to exhaust- ive researche- into the nature and phenomena of electricity and magnetism, his work takes a broad sweep through pretty well the whole range of
physics. His original work has been extensive, and many of the investigations made under his direction at Johns Hopkins are of world-wide relebrity, such, for example, as his deteronina- tion, for the government, of the exact value of the ohm as the standard unit of resistance. To the public his name is probably even more familiar in connection with his large diffraction gratings. which are ruled by a method of his own directly ou concave mirrors, the image of the solar sprc. 1rum being thus produced withont the nid of lenses. In fact, the photographs of the spectrum obtained with the aid of these gratings far exceed anything ele of the kind, and their exhibition before the National Academy of Sciences, in 1853, was one of the leading scientific events of the year.
In addition to developing the resources of the physical and electrical laboratories at Johns Hop- kins, where an electrical testing burean of great promise has also been lately established, Prof. Rowland, in some manner, continues to devote time to many other matters of importance. He is corresponding member for the British Association for the Advancement of Science, and of the Cam- bridge Philosophical society, is one of the twelve foreign members of the Physical Society of Lon- don, toreign member of the Royal Society of Great Britain, and is a permanent member of the Inter- national Commission for Establishing Electrical l'nits. It is possibly by way of recreation that he has entered the ranks of " amateur " photographer. and has produced such exquisite specimens as those which have been published in Harper's Magazine as illustrative of American skill in the use of the camera.
