THE SEXTON FAMILY.

[Revision of Serton Family by EDWIN HUBBARD of West Meriden, Conn. |

SEXTON (Saxton). This name is common in England, especially in Yorkshire. Rev. Peter Saxton (same person called Sexton, also) emigrated to Mass. Colony as early as 1630, and was the first minister of Scituate. Cotton Mather says he was from Yorkshire, and that he ret. to Eng. in his old age. A Thomas Sexton was at Bos- ton early, and had son Thomas, b. 1647; Samuel, b. 1653; Joseph, b. 1656.

THOMAS B. SEXTON, Esq., now res. in Mexico, who has spent much time and money in collecting the records of his ancestry both in England and America, and to whose MS. we are much indebted for the following genealogy of the Windsor Sextous, says: "I have the date of embarkation of George and Richard from Eng- land, and have traced back in England to the man who fought in the celebrated siege of Limerick, receiving the grant of the town from Henry for his services, and who is buried in Limerick Cathedral, which earldom exists to-day. I have the en- gravings of the memorial brasses in the church which bear his name, coat-of-arms, etc. The records show a George and Richard who went to America, but with a discrepancy of ten years."

The Sextons of the Conn. Colony. On the 17th of July, 1635, RICHARD SEXTON embarked at London on the ship Blessing, Capt. John Lester, bound for New Eng- land. He was, as appears from the official register of persons allowed by the Gov- ernment to embark for New England (Mass. Ilist. Soc. Coll., viii, 3d Series, 270), only 14 years of age. Hinman says he was in Windsor as early as 1643. He m. 15 Apl., 1647, Sara Cook (16 Apl., 1646, O. C. R., and whom Strage thinks was a sis- ter of Nathaniel Cook). Richard Sexton d. 3 May, 1662; she d. 13 June, 1674. Children (O. (. R.) :

George, of Windsor and Westfield, was a contemporary of RICHARD of Windsor, and probably his brother. That he was not a son, appears from the settlement of the wid. of Richard .- Gen. Ct. Rec. The earliest mention thus far found of him is in Rec. of Deeds (i. 33) at Springfield, Mass., in a deed from Thomas Cowper to George Sexton, " now resident at Windsor," of lands at Warranoke river, 10 June, 1663. On the Windsor Records is the following: " John, the son of George Sexton, was born at Windsor, 26 May, 1673." The date of George Sexton's removal to Westfield, Mass., appears from the following entry in Springfield Records : "Jonathan Alford, aged 70, and John Fowler, aged 67, say that Ambrose Fowler and George Sexton. formerly of Westfield, now deceased, were possessed of land there above 16 years ago," etc., dated 10 Jan., 1717, which places the date of his removal at about 1671.

By a deed recorded at Springfield (Vol. II, 73), George and Catherine Sexton convey land in Westfield to their sons Joseph and Benjamin, in consideration of the sum of $160, dated 25 Jan., 1687/8, and, by an instrument signed by George Sexton, Jr .. "sometime of Westfield, hut now of Newtown, on Long Island, son and heire to George Sexton of Westfield, lately deceased, consenting to the before mentioned writing made by my honored father" to my brothers Joseph and Ben- jamin, and dated 31 Oct., 1690, it appears that George Sexton, Sen'r, died between 1688 and 1690.
