C. says of him: "During his college course he was one of the Wethersfield secession, gaining his education mostly from Rev. Elisha Williams. He showed such prom- ise in theol. study that he was called, 2 Dec., 1723, to the then vacant ch. in North Haven, Conn., but, in preference, accepted the pastorship of a new society in the northern part of Stratford, Conn., called Ripton (now Huntington), where he was ordained, 12 Feb., 1723/4. It offered but a poor living, but he remained there until his death (52 yrs.), " greatly lamented after a few minutes' illness, " 19 Jan., 1776. in his 79th year, and the 52d of his ministry, having had a colleague in Oct., IFh. He eked out his scanty living by preparing students for college, among whom was Rev. David Brainard, after he was exiled from Yale Coll., and until he was licensed to preach in 1742.
