FAM. 13}. Horace6 (M.D.) (Horace,5 Capt. Hez.,4 Lamson,3 Josh.,? Josh.1), b. 1815; was educ. at private school until age of 13, then for a year at a school at Hopkinton, N. II .; then at the academies at All- herst, Mass., and Walpole, N. II .; teaching, during these later years, a district and ser- eral writing schools. While at Amherst he experienced a religious conversion, and at one time seriously thought of fitting for the ministry. Ile early discovered great invent- ive genius and mechanical talent, and after attaining manhood was recognized as quite an inventor. In 1831, he commenced the study of dentistry at Boston, and when he entered upon its practice there, soon took high rank in his chosen profession, and his HORACE WELLS, M.D. mechanical genius enabled him also to make valuable im- provements in dental instru- ments and methods; and, in 1838, he published an Essay on Teeth. In 1841, being then By permission of Publishers of Memorial History of Hifd. Co. a resident of Iltfd., Conn., he
gave to the world his wonderful discovery of Anesthesia, by which, by the use of nitrous oxide gas, surgery could he divested of pain. Though others afterward en- deavored to wrest from him the merit of originality in this great discovery, their efforts have only served more surely to establish his claims. In 1846, he went to France, to lay his discovery before the medical profession of that country, and succeeded in convincing them of its value, as was evidenced by the fact that the Medical Society of Paris subsequently honored him with the honorary title of M.D. Returning in the spring of 1847 from his trip to Europe (the expenses of which

were defrayed by the purchase of pictures which he imported and sold in the United States), he published a small pamphlet, A History of the Discovery of the Application of Nitrous Oxide Gus, Ether, and other Vapors to Surgical Operations, giving the re- sults of his experiments, etc. At this time, also, he gave lectures on ornithology, a branch of natural history in which he was well versed. He died 24 Jan., 18ES, in N. Y. city, where he had gone for the purpose of introducing anæsthetics in the hospitals and in dentistry. We feel that it is an honor to claim this modest and gifted scientist, the discoverer of the greatest boon to humanity of modern times, as a grandson of Ancient Windsor. WILLS, Solomon, captain of the volunteers from Tolland in 1275, was descended from Windsor ancestry, who were among the most respectable families in a town (Tolland) which peculiarly abounded in such. In the latter part of the war of Ifas he was a subaltern, and was the lieutenant commanding in the expedition to Havana in 1762. Hle was also a colonel of State troops, temporary levies, etc., in the Revo- Intion. Ile was a justice of the prace twelve years, and, on the organization of Tolland county, was appointed one of the judges of the county court. Next to Col. Chapman, he was the most influential patriot of Tolland. He was elected to the Assembly twenty-two times, semi-annually. The absence, or expected absence, of Col. Wills and Col. Chapman in the army, seems to have prevented their election several times each. It ought also to be stated that Col. Wills, having acquired one or two unbecoming habits, or hard failings, in 1793, the Legislature then and thence- forward omitted him in making out the annual judicial appointments. He died in 1807, @. 76.
