(dau. Darius and Lucy . When) Markham of Longmeadow. Mass., b. Enf. 2 July, Id E. W. 21 Mch .. 1-42; he d. E. W. 11 June, 1800. To his eager and intel- ligent interest the compiler of the Allen firmalogy was greatly indebted for facts and assistance. He lived in the house now occupied by his son Jabez S., and which was huilt about 1760, and is still in good preservation. Jabez was of medimm height, well compacted and proportioned, and robust, with a countenance expressive of a well balanced mind, and a manner natural, simple, and courteous. In his own intimate circle he was eminently social; outside of it he manifested a certain reserve, proceeding not so much from timidity as from a natural sense of cantion and of tart in knowing how and when to speak. In inborn kindness of heart produced
in him th highest form of politeness, which entered into the smallest details of life. And this kindness was extended to all dumb animals, and made him a peacemaker among his neighbors and universally respected by all who knew him, and his friend- ship, wherever it was bestowed, was pure, sincere, and intelligent. Cheerfulness. as well as a peenliar vein of humor, Jent a beautiful sunshine to his life.
Asa farmer he was observant, thorough, and practical, employing the best methods with the best results; and his mechanical genius led him to avail himself promptly of any improvements for labor in husbandry, or comfort in the family. Hle introduced the first stove into the town, and his tinder box attracted much atten- tion as a great improvement in its day upon the old way of getting fire from Hint and steel. He was especially fond of horticulture, and kept well abreast of all the world's movements in science, politics, and religions and moral enterprises, etc. Ile was a model of uprightness and a sincere Christian. His wife was a worthy com- panion of sucha man and his domestic life was most happy. Ch (b. E. H.):
