10. Sereno (M. D.). b. 1 . 1 . Mass., 9 Meh, ISTE. From the Boston filede of March 10th we quote the following appreciative notice of Dr. Watson:

" Sereno Watson, Pb. D., the distinguished bot- ani-t and curator of Harvard herbarium, died at hi- residence on Shepard street, Cambridge, yes- terday morning, after an illness of two months. Mr. Watson was horn December 1, 1×26, at East Windsor Hill, Coun. After graduating at Yale in 1847, he taught school at several places in New England and the Middle States, and was a tutor in lowa University. From 1853 to 1-55 he studied medicine with his brother, Lonis Watson, at Quincy. Ill., but before this had devoted some Time to its study in the University of New York.

THE WATSON FAMILY.

He practiced medicine two years, From 1856 to 1861 he was Secretary of the Planters' Insurance Company, Alabama, and during this period paid some attention to botany. For a few years after this he was engaged in literary work with Dr. Henry Barnard at Hartford. Io 1867 he went to California via the Isthmus of Panama, and, after a while, became botanist of the surveying expe- dition of the fortieth parallel, better known as the Clarence King expedition. The results of this work were elaborated in the herbarium of Professor Eaton of New Haven, and later in that of Professor Gray of Cambridge. From the year 1870 he had passed most of his time at c'am- bridge, in the study of North American flora, publishing many papers in the Proceedings of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Among his many important works printed sep- arately may be mentioned his Inder to North. American Botany and the Botany of California, the latter in conjunction with Profs. Gray and Brewer. Hle carried to completion the work on American Mosess, begun by the late Lesquereux and James. On the death of Professor Gray, Dr. Watson became curator of the Univ. herbari- um and continued the editing of the unfinished Synoptical Flora of North America. He was bo- tanical editor of the earlier vols. of the Century Dictionary. Ilis revision of Gray's Manual was issued two years ago.

He made several journeys of scientific inter- est, notably one to Guatemala, one to Europe, and one to the great Northwest, the latter in con- neetion with the forest department of the census of 1850. He received the degree of Ph.D. from lowa Univ., where he was at one time a tutor. He was a member of many scientific societies at

home and abroad. He was one of the five oldest active officers of Hary'd, and continned in his char- acteristic energetic work up to the very moment of his illness. Although his work was carried on wholly at the herbarium, so that he was not bro't personally in contact with the students, he always took an active interest in the college, and his form was very familiar in the college yard, though he was known personally to but few."

The Montreal (Canada) Gazette also says : " His connection with the valuable work of the principal herbarium of America made him widely and most favorably known as one of the best vegetable mor- phologist> of the day. His death removes prarti- cally the last of the conservative school of botanists on this continent, and creates a gap which it will be found difficult to fill. The fact that he had for many years heen looked to as our leading anthor- ity for the determination of species, will cause Caoadian students to feel that their loss is hardly less than that of their fellow-workers in the United States."

And a correspondent at East Windsor Ilill, where Dr. Watson's relatives reside, writes to the Hartford Times: "Mr. Watson's name will be handed down to posterity. There is a sweet lesson learned from the study of such a man's life. With all his-talent, his was a most beautiful soul. lle loved every spot of his native soil here in old Con- necticut. He often came to the old homestead where he was reared." His fame was world-wide, and his name goes into history as a distinguished
