made three journeys to examine this property, in the years 1814, 1818, and 1822, the first trip being accomplished entirely on horseback. In 1824 he setiled on a fract of 1,000 acres in what is now Tallmadge Township, Summit County, Ohio. but which was then a portion of Portage County, his property including nearly the whole of the present site of the city of Cuyahoga Falls. This town he founded. cutting the first trees in the autumn of 1824. He built the first dam, and an oil- mill on one side of the river and a saw-mill on the other. He d at C. Military Academy, by Pres Andrew Jackson, but, because of ill-health, abandoned that career, and at sixteen years of age joined his brother, Oliver F., in the dry goods trade in De-

troit, in 1826. lle was successful, and in 1833 joined a syndicate of tive, Lewis Cass and Wm. B. Astor being of the number, in a tour of inspection and for invest ment in the West. They bought lands in Green Bay, Milwaukee, Calumet, and Chicago; at the latter place he settled in 1833, making investments there in real estate, which became the nucleus of a fortune which was variously estimated, at the time of his death, at from four to ten millions of dollars. His name appears in the first Chicago Directory (1839) as an attorney and real estate dealer. He tigured largely in the city's carly history in connection with the establishment of banks, in- surance companies, schools, and public improvements generally, and especially as a promoter of railroads. Ile was a projector, and for a time the president of the old Galena & Chicago R. R., the first line of the present great Northwestern sys- tem, and lived to ser Chicago the greatest railroad center of the world. He was a member of the banking house of Newberry & Burch; twice president of the Chic. School Board; a founder and twice president of the Ohio Historical Society; and, by his will, he endowed a public library, which bears his name, with one-half of his estate. This endowment, now in real estate and securities, is valued at $5,000,000, and is increasing rapidly in value.
Mr. Newberry married, 22 Nov., 1842, Julia Butler (dan. of Judge James and Julia Hyde) Clapp of Oxford, Chenango Co., N. Y. The Clapps were a Windsor family, as well as the Newberrys, and were direct descendants from Capt. Roger (lapp from Devonshire, Eng., in 1630, in the same vessel with the N.'s, with whom there had once before been an intermarriage, viz., that of Eld. Preserve (s. Captain Roger) Clapp, with Sarah Newberry. Mrs. Julia B. (Clapp) Newberry was an act- ive member of the Prot. Epis. Church, known and respected for her liberality and benevolence, as well as for her talents and social acquirements. She d. Dec. 1885, a. 69. Mr. New berry died 6 Nov., 1868, at sea, en route for Havre to join his fam- ily, then in Paris. C'h. (b. Chicago, Ill.) :

Thos.1), when 16 years of age went to Hartford to learn the shoemaker's trade: during the last year of his appren- tireship his employer was contined in jail for debt, and during that year young Newberry provided for the support of his employer's family, by taking orders to the jail to be cut out, and then taking them home to make up and deliver. After completing his apprenticeship, he went to New York city, and a year later engaged at his native place, Wethersfield, and with his father, at last-making. At that time all lasts were made by hand, and he worked at this until he had accumulated a few hundred dollars, and machinery supplanted hand-work in his line of business. Ile 1. 9 Dec., 1524, Nancy Beiden, at Berlin, Conn., and went into the boot and shoe business; he also took the shoemaking department of the Connertient State Prison, at Wethersfield, paying the State 30 cents each day for each convict employed. Ile continued in this business until ISIs, when he removed to Ohio; thence, in 1854, he removed to Menominee, Mich., U. P., still carrying on his old business. Retiring from business about 1865, he went to live on a farm with his youngest sons, Edw'd and Selah, in the town of Peshtigo, Wis., where he met his death (Oct. 8th ) in the forest fire of 18;1 His wife Nancy, being absent on a visit to her daughter in Me- nominer, Mich., at the time of the fire, escaped the sad fate which overtook so many
