THE CADY FAMILY.

at Groton, 2 Dec., 1690, intestate. The inventory of his estate is recorded at p. 319 of Vol. 7 of the Middlesex Probate Court records; it amounted to $69, 9s., 0d., and was returned, so the record states, by John Cady and James (sie ') Cady, brothers of the deceased. His widow was living in 1711, when she was named in her father's will. Children (James, Elizabeth, and Aaron, known to have been such; the others are given by more or less probable conjecture) :

1. James, h. at Watertown, 1 Apl., 1679; m. Thank- | fnl -; was of Sherborn, Mass,, till 1:10; then of Marlboro' (1711-1714): then of Pomfret. Conn.), and Thankful His tombstone is in Brooklyn, Conn., by the side of his wife's, who d. 18 May. 1741.

2. John. perhaps b. at Watertown about 1650 1681; the Sergeant John Cady of Windsor (see above).

3. Daniel. b. ahout 1682-1683: m. Abigail rem. from Groton to the falls of the @minnebang river, a place then called Aspinock. in 1707: sokl ont in 1721, and was for a time of Tolland and then of Canterbury, but returned to Aspinock, and was living in 1:51. His a-retained children Were : Ephraim. Amos. Zorwith, Timothy. Su- ruth, Abigail. Jonas, Lydia. and Jedediah.

4. Abigail. who m. Ezekiel Cady, son of Daniel, Sr .. at Groton, 22 Apl .. 1202, as recorded at Pom-

fret. The rec. of Rey. Dudley Bradstreet wrongly marries her to Daniel Cady on the same day. Shed. Pomfret, 11 Apl .. 1257. having been the mother of 9 children Jimima, Ezekiel. Nehemiah, Hannah, Elizabeth, Jonas, Eunice. Hezekiah, and Abigail.

5. William, who had children bp, at Killingly. Beni juh, 1616, 1bijah. 1718, and Flijah. 1720. This fam- ily probably rem. to Plainfield or Norwich.

6. Elizabeth, b. at Groton. 10 Apl .. 1686; perhaps the Eliz. who m. Timothy Parkhurst at Killingly 15 Jan., 1716.

7. Aaron, b. at Groton, ~ Apl . 1688; was a " cord winder " at Marlboro', Mass., 1:14 1717: rom. to Canterbury. 1717: to Coventry. 1725; and to Tol Iand. 1739; he m. at Cambridge, Mass., 23 Mch .. 1209 10. Mercy, daughter of Josbna Fuller, h. 11 Mch., 1688 :9, and had 3 ch .: James, bp. at Wal tham, 1 July, 1711: Maron, b. at Canterbury. 7 Dec . 171s (afterwards Dr. Cady, whose sons lived in Columbia Co. X Y ): and Elizabeth, living un- married at Cambridge in 1745.

John Cady ( prob. s. of Jums). The records of transfers of land show his resi- dence in Groton, Mass. (1699-1701), Plainfield, Conn. (1704), Canterbury (1704- 1721), Tolland (1721-1725), Willington (1725-1727), Windsor (1728-1739), Coventry (1740), and Tolland (1440). . Probably he soon returned to Windsor, where he died Sept. 6, 1751. One of the Tolland deeds, dated Sept. 6, 1721, conveys to his " brother Daniel Cady of Tolland " 254 acres of land for 965. Another deed, from "Daniel Cady, Jr., of Canterbury " to "my brother John Cady of Willington," dated Ang. 28. 1725, reconveys the same land for $160. Investigations in Windham county show that this Daniel Cady, Jr., was neither Daniel C'ady of Tatnick Hill (Brooklyn), nor his son, but was the Daniel Cady who came from Groton to Aspi- nock on the Quinnebang River, in 1707, and lived most of his life in Killingly. In the History of Windham County Daniel Cady of Aspinock is confused with Daniel C'ady of Tatnick Hill, who was a son of Nicholas Cady of Watertown. Similarly, Sgt. John Cady is confused by Bond and Socage with his uncle John, s. of Nicholas Cady: for Joanna, wife of John, Sr., was living long after John, Jr., had children borne by his wife Elizabeth. That this John Cady was the s. of James C'ady of Groton is inferred from the following facts: He lived in Groton with the other ('adys and with them came to Connecticut. Aaron, the proved son of James C'ady, followed John to Canterbury, and afterwards went likewise to Tolland and Coven try. Cornelius, grandson of James, and son of James, Jr., also went to Coventry. Dr. Aaron Cady is asserted to have been either brother or cousin to Ebenezer, s. of John Cady, by the descendants of both Dr. Aaron and Ebenezer, who settled together in Columbia Co .. N. Y. John's age, as given on his tombstone, conflicts with this lwlief, but ages on tombstones are often wrong, as, for instance, on the tombstones of Daniel Cady of Tatnick Hill, and of Ebenezer, s. of this very John. The families of the other sons of Nicholas are known; but in the family record of James there is a blank of seven years from the birth of James, in 1679, to Elizabeth, in 1656, which blank is the only place where the names of John, Darid, Abigail, and William can be inserted.

Sergt. John Cady was married twice. His first wife, Elizabeth - , was the mother of tive and perhaps six of his children; the second wife was Elizabeth Mather [ poss. Eliz., dau. of John and Sarah ( Fitch) Stoughton, b. 19 Feb., 1692, and m. Joseph Mather, who d. ; Nov., 1717 .- R. T.S.]. Cook Buriut Rec. gives Oct., 1739, Mr. Cady's childl. The date of neither marriage is known, but we may suppose the first to have taken place about 1698, and the second twenty or thirty years later. VOL. II .- 18

In 1640 he was for a short time a resi- dent of Plainfield, but within the year removed to Coventry, where he probably resided several years. He is next heard of as coming with his whole family to New Concord, now Canaan, in Columbia Co., New York, probably about 1762. Family tradition gives him an intermediate stay (from 1754 to 1762) in Dutchess Co .. N. Y. Ilis wife was Prudence Palmer, daughter of Jonathan and Merey (Mannering) Palmer, who was born in the northern part of Stonington, March 31, 1718, 9. He died at Canaan, May 16, 1779. Prudence, daughter of Ebenezer and Prudence Cady, was probably their okkest child, as the inscription on her gravestone reads, " Prudence, wife of Daniel Love- joy, . June 8, 1821, aged 84 years." Where she was born is unknown. Her mar- riage may have taken place in " The Oblong," i. e., near Amenia, Dutchess Co., N. Y. Her husband's tombstone reads, " Sacred to the memory of Capt. Daniel Love- joy, who departed this life July 28, 1795, in the 57th year of his age." Another slone, near by, is that of " Sarah, relict of Mr. Benjamin Lovejoy, who d. May 16, 1790, in the 82d year of her age." Where the Lovejoys came from is not known, but it is very probable that they were Connecticut people. The Lovejoys settled in Canaan, N. Y., probably in 1761, and they are buried in the western part of the town. Ch (the order of age uncertain):

THE CADY FAMILY.

FAM. 6. Ebenezer: (Capt. ) (Ebenezer,? John,1), b. 20 Jan., 1743; first of, the Cadys to settle in Columbia Co., N. Y. His grandson related that he came there some years before the Revolutionary war, as a hired servant of his brother-in-law, Daniel Lovejoy, and that the rest of the Cadys came the next year. The application for a pension of his brother Elijah fixes the date of this settling as 1762. He married Chloe (dan. of John and Ruth Pratt) Beebe, born at either Kent or Sharon, Con., 29 Apl., 1747. He was lieutenant, and later captain, of the 3d company of the 17th Albany Regiment of militia during the Revolution. He d. II Sept., 1816. His wife survived him many years, made a speech in 1840 favoring the election of President Harrison, and died not long afterwards. Ch .:
