After his m. Mr. Phelps removed to New York and dealt in hardware, first with Mr. Pickering, and second with William Sheldon as partner. Afterward he carried on business alone. Ile afterward moved to New York, and, with John Jay Phelps, opened an office at 45 Wall Street for banking and brokerage. In 1858 his partner retired and 1. N. Phelps continued the business until 1879, when the banking firm of Phelps, Stokes & Co. was formed. At this time his partners were Mr. James Stokes and his son in-law, Anson Phelps Stokes. After six years Mr. James Stokes died and the firm was dissolved. From that time Mr. Phelps gave bis attention only to his personal interests.
"Mr. Phelps was not noted for his connection with popular or great enterprises. He made the reputation simply of a successful business man, and this not by any bold or brilliant strokes of financial genius, but by persistent application, tireless energy, excellent judgment, and careful economy. He had strong convictions, firin decision, and a remarkable memory. He recalled with pleasure his early struggles in the Connecticut village. His valuable judgment in commercial mat- ters was always at the disposal of his friends, who frequently sought even his fire- side for his freely-granted advice. He was regular in his habits, avoided notoriety, was liberal in his charities, and was for many years a member of the Brick Presby- terian Ch." He m. pastors in Simsbury. "Oct. 13th, 1796, Personally appear'd, Anson G. Phelps, a Minor over fourteen years of age, and made choice of Thos. Woodbridge Phelps of Symsbury to be his Guardian. May 5, 1799, the two bros. were adm. to the Ch. in N. Canton, the Rev. Jeremiah Hallock being pastor. A little later, the three bros., William, Thomas, and Anson Phelps, with their cousin, Job Phelps, rom. from Simsbury, and it would seem never returned unless for brief visits. An- son G. Phelps settled in Hartford; he joined Center church; succeeded in business; married; and added to the growth of the city by erecting a large brick building on North Main street, known as Phelps's Block. The wife of Mr. Phelps was Olivia (dan, of Elihu and Elizabeth Olcott) Eggleston of Middletown, b. 30 Mch., 1784; m. 26 (?) Oct., 1806; d. in New York, 24 Apl., 1859.
" In 1815 MIr. Phelps rem. to New York city, and commenced that commercial career which so prominently identified him with the history of that city, and with all its higher interests, for half a century. He was the founder of the well known firm of Phelps, Dodge & Co., and his mereantile life was one of remarkable pros- perity. More than that: he and his partner, Mr. Dodge, were acknowledged in that great community as the types of the Christian merchant. Both were members and elders in Dr. Spring's Church, and the name of Phelps, Dodge & Co. became everywhere identified with the interests of the Presbyterian Church." Mr. Phelps's high standard of mercantile morality, his deep personal piety and decided interest in all good words and works, rendered him a tower of strength to the cause of Christ; and these qualities of head and heart found their natural and joyous ex- pression in deeds of systematic benevolence and in the promotion of all important philanthropic enterprises. The American Bible Society, the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, the American Home Mission Society, the Colonization Society, the Blind Asylum of New York City tof which he was at one time Pres.), and many other societies and charitable institutions, were largely aided by him during his life and generously remembered by his will. Among others, his native town of Simsbury received a trust fund of $1,000 for its poor - doubtless in remembrance of the day when he, a poor orphaned hoy, was largely dependent upon the kindness of its people. The memorial verses of Mrs. Sigourney thus fitly characterize the secret of Mr. Phelps's life:
". The cares of commerce and the rush of wealth Swept not away his meckness, nor the time To cultivate all houscholl charities: Nor the answering, conscientious zeal To consecrate a portion of his gains To Man's relief and the Redeemer's cause.'
" We close with a clause from Mr. Phelps's will, which is peculiarly illustra- tive of the whole tenor of his life :
" 'I give and bequeath to each of my gr. children, living at my decease, the sum of $5,000, to be paid them as they severally attain the age of 21 years. This latter bequest I direct to be accompanied by my executors with this injunction .- that each of my said gr. children shall consider the said bequest as a sacred deposit committed to their trust, to be invested by each gr. child, and the income derived therefrom to be devoted to the spread of the Gospel and to promote the Redeemer's Kingdom on earth, hoping and trusting that the God of Heaven will give to each of them that wisdom which is from above, and incline them to be faithful stewards and transmit the same to their descendants to be sacredly devoted to the same oh- jects. I know that this bequest is absolute, and places the amount so given be vond my control; but my earnest hope is that my wish may be regarded as I leave it, an obligation binding simply on their integrity and honor. ""- II. R. S. Mr. Anson G. Phelps d. at his residence, the "Coster Place," on the East River, 30 Nov., 1853. He was buried in Greenwood Cemetery. Ch. :
