Dr. Hayden was no scientific unbeliever; he believed firmly in Nature's God, ITis Word, and His Revealed Religion. He was proud of his profession, and early saw the necessity of an association of its respectable members for purposes of mu- tual encouragement and common effort. He took a prominent part in the forma- tion of the " American Society of Dental Surgeons," of which, in 1838, he was elected president; and he wrote largely for its published organ, The American Jour-

nul and Library of Dental Science. To his labors as an instructor of office-students, and as a lecturer to a night-class, in a hired building, for many years, may be largely attributed the formation, in B., of the Dental College which was opened in 1840, of which he was first president and Prof. of Dental Path. and Physiology. The old line of the ancient writer, "Vil actum credens dum quid superesset agen- dum," might well be applied to Dr. Hayden. He reckoned nothing done while anything remained undone. Hence, to the very end of his life, he was ever active, looking upon acquisition as but preparatory to requirement, and delighting in ef- fort rather than in possession.
Dr. Hayden inherited his father's military spirit, and when the British landed at North Point, Md., in 1814, as soon as Maryland called her citizens to her defense, he enlisted as a private in Capt. Thos. Warner's Co., 39th Reg't, Md. Mil., of which Co, he was at once app. first, sgt., serving as such at North Point and at Fort Mc- llenry. After the action which resulted in the repulse of the British, he was app. acting surgeon by General Smith, and served in the hospitals. Ile was a versatile writer, as his numerous published papers on Dentistry. Geological and Mineralogical subjects, Intonation, Silk Cocoons, Pathology, etc., testify. He obtained in 1823, a patent for the application of pyroligneous acid and oil to the tanning of leather; also for preventing dental decay: and the very valuable collection of minerals which he left at his death became the basis of the extensive cabinet now owned by Roanoke College, Va. He was a member of alm. Society of Surgeon Dentists ; Cor. Sec. Balto. Physical . Issoc., 1819 (now Md. Acad. of Science); member of Am. Goal. Soc. (now . Im. .Issoc. for the Idrance of Science); memb. Md. Med. und Chir. Faculty ; corr. memb. .lead. Nat. Science, Phila., Pa .; of West. Alcad. Nat. Science ; hon, memb. Med. Soc. Balt. ; of Med. Soc. Orange Co., N. F .; of Western Museum Sor .; and, in 1843, the Royal Society of Northern Antiquaries, Copenhagen, Denmark, requested his ac- ceptance of a Fellowship in that Soc .- an honor of which death prevented his acceptance .*
