consequent growth of manufacturing industries. He never hell civil or political office; but there were no matters affecting the welfare of the community which did not awaken his lively interest, and he was foremost in all measures of public improvement. The impress of his mind and hand was to be seen on all the material interests of the town. But his best work was in those things which concern the higher well-being of every community - the school, the home, the church. Hle was a central figure in all the best activities of Windsor Locks for thirty years; and his life, taken in all its bearings, was by far the most influential that Windsor Locks has ever known. He had a remarkably fine presence and winning address, with a commanding form, slightly bowed in his later years by rheumatic suffering. He was of quick and clear apprehension, systematic in business, hopeful and carnest in whatever he undertook, responding freely and gladly to calls for help, whether in money or personal service. le d. 29 Aug., 1869, in his 59th year. Mr Dobson, b. Preston. Lancashire, Eng., 5 Aug., 17st, came to Vernon. Conn .. 1809 Physically large and powerful of frame, he was also a vigorous, derp, and wholly original thinker, and a chave and midependent observer, with a decidedly mathematical and inventive mind. He built and operated the first cotton-spinning mill in V., and Coggswell's Hist. of Rockrille. 1523 71, contains a chapter of remi- nisceners from his pen, of the great growth of the manufacturing industries of that vicinity of which he could well say, as did tasar of old, " all of which I saw, and a great part of which i was concerned in." Mr. It. however, had more than a local distinction, honorable as that was to him. A brief and modest paper. contributed by him to the In. Journal of Sciences, in 1826, was accepted by the eminent scientists computing the Geological Society of London (when it came to their notice in 1819) as solv- ing a question which had been long and fruitlessly discussed by them, viz., as to the cause of grosses, scratches, and peculiar markings observable on certain rocks and boulders. His theory, based on his own observations while getting ont stone for the foundations of his own cotton till at V., led Mr Dob. ean to the belief that these markings, etc., were due to aquien-glacial action " combined with that of Matical glaciers, acting in place, or moved gently downward and forward in summer, and in winter backward." His views, which evinced much reading and thought, were declared by Sir Roderick Murchison, Pres, of the tical Society, as containing " the essence of the modified glacial theory at which ett have arrived after so much debate : and he " congratulates American Science in having po- reseed the original author of the best glacial theory « previous acquaintance with which might have saved reclames of disputation on both sides of the Atlantic." Mr. Doband. at V., 18 Mch. 1875. r. 93 yrs., 7 mos .. 13 days. His milling interests were continued in V. by his son. Hon. John s. THE DRAKE FAMILY.
DRAKE. [Since the appearance of our first edition, much research has been given to the English ancestry of the va- rious families of this name in America. The Rev. W. L. CHAFFIN of No. Easton, Mass., and II. B. DRAKE of New London have been prosecuting researches especially in the line of Thomas Drake of Weymouth, Mass. We give, here- with, a brief abstract of what has thus far been discovered.]
In England the name has long been borne by many dis- tinguished as navigators, clergymen, martyrs, and authors. Among the foremost of these English families is that which had its seat at Ashe, Co. Devon, and from it descended the COAT OF ARMS OF DRAKE OF ASHE. greater portion of the Drakes of Mass. and Conn. The line of ancestry of the Windsor (Conn.) Drakes may be thuis summarized:
I. John, of Exmouth, Eng., 1360; m. Christian (dau. of Jolin) Billett, and acquired Ashe. They had a son, John,? who was unlawfully excluded from Ashe by Chris- topher Francheyney, the son of his mother by her second marriage with Richard Francheyney.
II. John,ª settled at Otterton, about 16 miles from Ashe; m. Christian (dau. of John) Antage, and founded the Otterton Family of Drake, through his son,
III. John,3 who inherited Otterton and m. a Cruwys of Cruwys Morchand. Their son,
IV. John, of Otterton, m. Agnes (dan. John) Kelloway, and had issue : John,5 Richard, Robert, Thomas, and Agnes.
V. John, 5 settled first at Axmonth, and by a suit-at-law recorered . Ishe. Ile mn. Mar- garet (dau. of John) Cole of Rill; their son,
VI. John,6 inherited Ashe; m. Anne (dau. Roger) Greenville ; had issue : Ber- nard, who inherited Ashe: Robert," Richard, who settled at Eshire, Co. Surrey.
VII. Robert, settled at Wiscomh, parish of South Leigh, Co. Devon; m. and had ixxue : William," and Henry .*
VIII. William,8 of Wiscomb, Co. Devon; m. and had issue : John,9 b. about 1600, and Thomas .*
IX. John,' b. at Wiscomb, Co. Devon, abt. 1600; m. Elizabeth Rogers; this was the family which emigrated to New Eng. and finally settled at Windsor.
(For above, see Lyson's Magna Brittanica, VI, part I and II; also, John Prince's Worthies of Devon, 328, edition of 1810.)
* Thomas, another memb, of this family, and poss. bro. of John.º the Windsor settler, came to Mass. and beft. at Weymouth, where he d. 1691: or the Thomas of Weymouth may have been a cousin of Jolin 9 of Windsor, and son of his oncle Henry.
There was, also. a Robert Drake, h. abt. 1580, who sett. at Exeter, N. H., aht. 1613, but rem. to Ilamp- ton abt. 1651, and who was at one time res. in Colchester, Essex Co .. Eng., from whence he prob. emigrated to Am. Three sons and a dan. came with him. He may have been a grandson of Robert Drake, the martyr, minister of Thundersley, C'o. Essex, hurned at the stake in the reign of Queen Mary. Savage's V. Eng. Gen- · alogical Dirt.
There was a SAMUEL DRAKE res, at Fairfield, Conn., 1650; rep. to Gien. Ct., 1662; rem. to East Chester. N. Y., 1665 .- Sce App. to Bolton's Hist. West. Co., V. Y .; Savage's N. Eng. Geneal. Dict.
From these four all the Drakes of New Eng., N. Y .. N. J., and the Western States, are believed to have been descended.
There was a later emig. cir. et ante, 1747. to some of the Southern States, of desc. of TuoMas, youngest bro. of Admiral Sir Francis Drake, and. Inter on, in that line from John D of Ivy Bridge, Co. Devon, Eng., viz .. Joseph, b. abt. and before 1700: Francis, bp. 1701, and Bumpfylde, bp. 1701. Joseph was murdered in Va .: Francis sett, in present Nash Co., N. C .; desc. now in N. C. and Ga .; and tradition aver- that Bamp- fylde eame North - pors, some of the Penn, Drakes may dese, from him. John f. Harrison of Charlotte, N.C .. Dr. V. T. Drake of Toisnot. N. C., and Eugene Drake of Ogelthorpe, Ca., are engaged in editing the genealogy of this line. Admiral Sir Francis Drake, in his will, names Richard Drake of County Surrey as his " well-be-

John, the emigrant,* came to Boston, 1630; bo't land at Taunton, but did not settle; came to W. before 1639.
