dian, that the friendship thus early contracted for him, by so honest a man and strong a partisan as Col. Harper, continued unabated during the war, in which they were on different sides, and for many years after.
In 1767 the Harper brothers determined to purchase from the " native Indians of Ononghquage" certain lands which they owned and were willing to sell, at the head of the Delaware and Charlotte rivers, in the (then) Albany Co. Province of N. Y., and obtained from Sir Henry Moore, Governor of N. Y., a license to make such purchase (original in possession of D. N. Gaylord, grandson of Col. John Harper). which was completed 14 June, 1768; and a patent was duly granted for said pur- chase (250,000 acres, "more or less") in the king's name, by Cadwallader Colden, Esq., Lient. Governor, to John Harper, Sr., and to his sons, William Harper, John Harper, Jr , Joseph Harper, and Alexander Harper, and to If others, most of whom afterwards assigned their interest to the Harpers, in compliance with the English rule which restricted (in ordinary cases) each settler's claim to 1,000 acres .- N. Y. Calendar Land Papers, 411. Of this tract, 22,000 acres were subsequently patented as a township by the name of HARPERSFIELD. * Among the earliest settlers or own- ers of lots, we find the names of Joel and Jedediah Gaylord and - Oshorn - Windsor names, and who probably emigrated thence with the Harpers.
In 1721, Colonel Harper, accompanied by several men, removed his family from Cherry Valley to Harpersfield, for the purpose of making a permanent settle- ment and dividing his patent into lots. The colonel first erected a shelter for his family in the form of an Indian wigwam and there lived till a house could be built, but not long after was called away on business. His wife then superintended the erection of a dwelling, directing the men whom the colonel had brought with them, and before his return the walls were fully raised. The house was soon roofed and fitted for the residence of the first white family that ever made a home in Harpers- tidd. The survey was completed in 1272, and soon after a number of emigrants arrived, most of them from New England, but some from other sections. Colonel Harper's father and two brothers are known to have been in the town at this time. This was an emigration into a country covered with dense timber, and involved all the labor, danger, and privation which accompanies the clearing and development of a new country; and the adventures and experiences of Col. Harper's family can be found more at length in Jay Gould's Hist. of Delaware Co., N. Y.
The settlement grew apace, and in 1775 Col. Harper erected a grist-mill, which saved the settlers the toilsome use of the mortar, or a journey to Schoharie. When the Revolutionary War began, nearly every settler in UI. sided with the Colonies. They formed a Vigilance Committee and prepared for self defense, but continued to enlarge and cultivate their clearings until 122, when Brant and Butler's horde of Indians and Tories invaded the settlement, and nearly all the inhabitants Bed. Col. Harper and family and many of his neighbors went to Schoharie, and some re- turned to New England. H appears that an Indian belonging to Brant's party had received favors and kind treatment from Col. Harper, and as the hostiles were on their way to II. with intent to kill, capture, and pillage, this Indian contrived to leave the camp and reach t'ol. HI.'s home by night, and inform him of the approach-

ing danger. On receiving the news, Col. H. hastily concealed such household stuff as he could not carry, put his wife and younger children on his only horse, and, with the other children, started on foot, through a dark and tempestnons night, 10 Sharon, Schoharie Co., which he reached before noon the next day. The next morn- ing the house they left behind them, the first ever built in I., was burned to ashes by the disappointed savages, as was also the grist-mill above referred to.
C'ol. Harper * returned with his family to HI. after the close of the war (his noble wife having d. at Johnstown, in 1778), and rebuilt the grist-mill about 1785 or 'S6. The first (Presb.) church organized in IT. was formed at Col. IL.'s house, June, 1787, and he was one of its first trustees and gave it a burial-lot, which was the first burial place used in Harpersfield. He d. 20 Nov., 1811, and was buried there. as also was his second wife; their remains, however, were removed in 1853 to the cemetery at the Center.
One who personally knew from his own experience whereof he spoke, says of the Harpers, as a family: " They were kind and generous to the poor, and ready at any time to do anything in their power to make all around them happy." HAYDEN. [Since the issue of our first edition, the Records of the Conn. Line of the Hayden Family has been published (1888) by JABEZ HASKELL HAYDEN, Esq., of W. Locks. In condensing from this for our present edition, we have been compelled by limitations of space imposed on us by the amount of Windsor material at our disposal to confine ourselves almost exclusively to the families of Windsor, Conn., Haydens, leaving the Harwinton (Conn.) and western lines to refer to the fuller published Genealogy, above referred to .- II.
