HOLKINS. From the Preston Ch. Rec. we learn that another ch. of George Halkins, John, was bp. 28 Oct., 1716.

Preston Ld. Rec show that 15 Aug., 1694, Thos. and Peter Davison (Denison ?) together with George Halkins, bought from Daniel Mason of Stonington, a tract of land "seittuate and Lying neer to pahchog cedar swamp." This swamp is in what is now the town of Griswold, and is between the Patchang River and the State of Rhode Island. The deed does not say of what town the grantees were res- ident, but we incline to think they were then of Stonington. Later Geo. Halkins was made a freeman of Preston, and held the office of surveyor of highways. Ile moved to Coventry, and there some of his ch. are buried; he prob. d. there.

NATHAN D. BATES of Norwich, a descendant of the Haukins fam., tells me the following, which he learned from a correspondence with Dr. T. LARKEN TURNER of Boston. Hau-clans, a family originally in Scotland [ Wales?]. derived its name from the fact that the clan was affected with an impediment in speech - hence, hau-clans. The chief of the clan was Richard. He having overcome an enemy, granted pardon, saying, "I am bold as a lion, but hold out the olive branch of peace." The family crest is a lion with an olive branch in his fore-paw. Descended from Rich'd was Thomas Hankins, a sea captain, citizen of London, member of the London Artillery, who rem. to Boston: sett. in Dorchester; Capt. of the company of The Anc. and Hon. Art'y; m. Mehitable -, and was father of a large fam .; he d. at sea. Some of his sons went to Portsmouth and to Providence, R. I., and from the R. I. lines descended the Hawkins. laukins, Hankins, lolkins, and Ilalkins of Rhode Island and Conn. We have not learned the name of the fath. of Geo. Halkins of Preston, but Mr. Bates is confident that this George Halkins was a descendant of Capt. Thomas of Dorchester .- R. T. S.

HUNTINGTON. Careful search in the first one or two vols, of W'. Ld. Rec. would probably give more information concerning Simon, Thomas, and Christopher Hun- tington than we have printed in Vol. II. Time was too limited and other work too pressing, however, to permit this search .- R. T. S.

Pages 605-6, Line of Isaac. It is believed that the father of Isaac. b. abt. 1733, was Isaac; but who was his father is not known. It is said by some of his descendants that the name was Josiah, but we do not find that any Josiah Phelps had a son Isaac in this generation. Search has been made in both town, church, and prob. records. The rec. as given may be correct; but there is no certainty back of . Lieut. Isaac. W. land records read that Win. Barber granted land to Isaac Phelps, Jr., 4 Aug., 1742, vol. 7, p. 263. The Tien Rec. of Westfield read that Isaac Phelps d. Oct., 1753; the Prob. Rec. of N. read that the will of Isaac P., late of Wstfd, was prob. Apl., 1753. There is either some mistake in the public records, or there were two men of the same name and generation,-R. T. S.
