FAM. 30. Francis " (Hon. ) (Ashbel,5 Ahol,4 Thox. ," John? Jona.1), changed the spell ing of his family name when young, at the suggestion of a distant relative, to accord with its original French form of Gillette. He was b. in that part of W. now included in Bloomfield, 14th Dec., 1507. At the age of six years he lost his father, and his mother, ou her second marriage, two or three years later, took the family to Ashfield, Mass. Owing to the lack of sympathy or interest in him manifested by his stepfather, his childhood was not a happy one; yet, though he could hardly be said to have a home, and was made frequently to feel the loss of his natural father, he exhibited even theu those qualities of truthfulness, honor, and courage which afterwards characterized him as a man. Even his harsh stepfather, whose hatred of him seemed almost insane in its malignity, acknowledged that he had never known him to utter a falsehood or use a profane word. When a little more than fifteen years old, young Gillette attended the Ashfield academy, and was not long in finding that he must have a collegiate education; and amid many obstacles and discouragements, with unexampled industry, he fitted himself, in one year's time, to enter Yale College. When the time arrived for him to go to New Haven for ex- amination, his stepfather's wrath burst forth, and, knowing the boy's dutiful obe- dience to his mother, he persuaded her to interpose and prevent his going. But he had under-estimated the quiet boy's force of will. Suspecting the source of her objections (which might have had more force had he not fortunately possessed the means of acquiring au education, independent of her), the young student reasoned with his mother and sought to obtain her approval. Finding. however. that she was too much under her husband's influence to be readily moved, and, determined to have an education, he closed the conference by saying, " Well, mother, I must and will go to college, in spite of father or the deril!" And go he did. In college he was studious, emulative, yet social and popular with his fellows. In the classies and belles lettres he ranked high; and though mathematics were not favorite studies with him, yet he maintained a l'air standing in them. He was elected a member of the Phi Beta Kappa, and chosen unanimously by his classmates as their valedicto- rian. After graduation (1829) he entered a law office, but was compelled by weak huings to relinquish his legal studies. Ile took up life again on his little Bloomfield patrimony. as a scientific farmer, upon which, in 1831, he erected a house of un. hewn stone brought from the near mountain side, and which is still a striking feat ure of the town, set far back from the street, and approached from two directions by winding avenues of trees. This was the west half of his father's farm, of 200 or more acres, lying a mile and a half from the Centre on the Hartford road. Here, for eighteen years, he lived, his health fully restored by his out-of-door life, his mind ever devoted to the interests of Bloomfickl and to his beloved family circle.
But he soon, and irresistibly, became a man of mark in larger circles. Upon taking the electors' oath in 1832, he was chosen to represent the town of Windsor in the General Assembly, and, in 1838, received the same honor from Bloomtiek, which, three years before, had been incorporated by the Legislature, and which received its name at his suggestion. It was in that year that questions touching the subject of slavery were first pressed upon the attention of the Legislature, and

his earnest advocacy of the anti-slavery cause first showed itself in a forcible speech on the proposition to erase from the Constitution of the State the word "white." He had become so thoroughly and permanently identified with the cause of humanity and justice that when, in 1841, the Liberty Party was organized in Connecticut he was nominated as its candidate for governor, notwithstanding his frequent declinations, and this nomination was frequently repeated by the Liberty and Free Soil parties thuring the next twelve years; and more than once the old stone house sheltered the Hying slave en route to Canadian shores and liberty. In ISST he was elected to fill the unexpired (long) term in the U. S. Senate, vacated by the resignation of lon. Truman Smith, and his first vote was cast against the Nebraska Bill, which was passed at midnight of the day of his arrival in Washing- ton. It is doing no discredit to the many eminent men who have occupied a seat in our National Senate, from Connecticut, to say that, during his brief term of office, no Comertient Senator ever deported himself with more of dignity or propriety : none knew better when to speak and when to be silent, while by his votes, not less than by his speeches, he evinced that capacity for statesmanship which caused his retirement from the Senate to be regarded as a serious loss by the ablest statesmen in it.
In matters nearer home, however, Mr. Gillette was ever active. With the cause of temperance he early identified himself, and no man in Connecticut was more consistent and earnest in its advocacy. Some of his most eloquent addresses and his most powerful written appeals were directed against the tratlie in intoxicating drinks, And in the promotion of education he was equally active, from the build- ing of the meat little brick schoolhouse in his district, in Bloomfield, to the larger movements which concerned the educational interests of the whole State. From 1838 to 1842 he heartily sympathized with and aided Hon. Henry Barnard in his zealous labors for educational reform. In 1849, at the organization of the State Normal School, he was named as one of its trustees, and was soon after chosen chairman of the Board, an office which he filled with great acceptance for many years. In 1857 he was chosen Acting Visitor of the Board of Visitors of Schools in Hartford, and filled the office with rare fidelity and ability. In 1852 he rem. to Hartford, and, in connection with John Hooker, Esq., his brother in-law, purchased the Nook Farm estate, in the management of which, in literary pursuits, and in the performance of his public duties, he found ample enjoyment and won the con- tinned respect of his fellow citizens until his death, Sept. 30, 1879, at the age of 12. He was buried in Farmington, Conn.

FAM. 32. Horace Cornelius (Horace," Jabez, John, Dan. 3 Corn," Jone.') Gil- kette (which form of the spelling he preferred) spent his boyhood and early manhood chietly in his native town (Torringford, Conn.), which, at that time, had a high rep- ntation for the excellence of its schools. From his earliest days he had a decided preference for the study of medicine, and, at an early age, began reading with Dr. Case of T., continning his studies afterward with Dr. Woodward, also of T., who enjoyed a wide reputation as a medical teacher. In the winter of 1826 he attended lectures at the Harvard Medical School, and next year entered the Medical Dep't of Yale College, where he grad. 1829. He immediately located in practice at So. W., where he remained actively engaged and much respected for over 30 years. Oct. 1, 1831, he m. Sarah A. Watson of New Hartford, Conn. A natural love for the curious and antique led him, early in life, to begin a collection of minerals, relies, etc., etc., which ultimately became a valuable and interesting one. The Revol. and Indian history of the State was therein largely represented. He was a ready writer and took much pleasure in collecting facts and materials regarding the early his- tory of East and South Windsor, with an ultimate intention of writing a history of these towns, and a series of papers on these topics was published in the Hartford Times (see Preface, p. 9, Vol. I). Dr. Gillette rem., in 1863, to Chicago, Il., served in the War of the Civ. Rebell. as one of a Volunteer Corps of Surgeons, after the battles at Pittsburgh Landing, and his name is mentioned in " The Roll of Honor " in the Yale Coll. catalogue. After 12 years' residence in C., he rem. to St. Charles, IN., 35 miles west of C., where he res. until his death, 21 Dec., 1878, in his 72d year, his wife surviving him only 3 months. Ch. (bp. E. W.
