The circumstances of his death were these: Ile as Justice of the Peace held court in the house that stood north of the house in which Wm. Latimer now lives in Bloomfield (1885 or earlier). One evening he rendered judgment against one Burr, who was heard to say that he would get even with Judge Roberts. There was quite a crowd, and, as the Judge was lame, he was one of the last to leave, and was found dead at the foot of the steps, next morning. Whether he fell or was thrown down, was never fully known. One of his near neighbors, Michael Seagur, awoke his wife that morning saying, "Judge Roberts is dead; that ugly Burr pushed him off the steps at Griswold's last night, and he is there now. I have sren it in a dream three times this night." Before they had done breakfast Seagur was called to the inquest. Burr fell dead in the road not long after, and this (the narrator said), was considered a very just judgment. Judge R. lay where he fell all night; his cane went through his hat and entered his temple. On his gravestone in the Blfd. burial-ground, under the usual inscription, are the following lines:

" No Cordial to revive his heart, No one to hold his head, No friend to close his dying eyes, The ground was his death bed."

There is some corroborative testimony to this incident. The house where court was held was kept as a tavern by Solomon Griswold. My informant adds with regard to Roberts being a commissary, that he many years ago saw a letter written to him by Gov. Jonathan Trumbull regarding the purchase of army stores. This letter cannot now be found .-- Letter of Jus. I. Goodirin of N. Y. City. Ch. :

ROCKWELL .* This family is said to trace its origin to Sir Ralph De Rocheville, one of the Norman knights accompanying the Empress Maude to England, when she laid claim to that kingdom, and who finally joined Henry Il, and received three knights of land in Co. York, upon which the family have since resided, their seat being at Rockwell Hall, near Borough Bridge, in that county. Sir Joux Rock- WELL, of this family, is mentioned in Eng. history as the resoner of the Earl of Northumberland, and Lord Percy (the celebrated "Hotspur "), from the Earl Doug- las's party, at the Battle of Halidon Hill, in the reign of Henry IV. Arms : argent [white], upon a chief sable [black]; three boars' heads couped [ent off], or [gold] langued [tongued], gules [red]. Crest, upon a wreath of the colors of the shield, or a boar's head as in the arms. Motto: " Tout pour mon Dieu et mon roi."

William (Dea.). The Parish Register of Holy Trinity, Dorchester, Eng .. has this ree. ord: " 14 Apl., 1621, William Rockwell and Susan Capen married " The Hist. D. (p. 79) gives this name as Susanna Chapin ; doubtless Capen is correct, and she was prob, another dan. of Bernard Capen, for, according to his family Bible. he had a dan. of this name (one of his dans. m. Robert Cliford, and another Nich I'D sall, and another Thos, Swifte). Hist. D (p. 42) gives Susanna Capen's birth as 11 Apl., 1602, the Rockwell Rve .. 5 Apl .: the R. Rc. gives her death as the 14th, and the (. Ree, the 13th Nov., 1666. Hist. D. (p. 17) speaks of William R. in a list of " several gentlemen, past middle life, with adult families and good estates ": he was a deacon in the church formed by Rev. Mr. Warham and his friends in the New

Hospital at Plymouth, and which came over to Dorchester, 1630; was one of the first three selectmen of D .; was, with Revs. Warham and Maverick, and his fellow deacon, William Gaylord, app. to lay out the first land grants at D .; one of the 21 freemen who took the oath of fidelity, 18 May, 1631; 9 Nov., 1630, was on jury in first manslaughter case in the colony; he and Dea. Gaylord were app. adm'rs on es- tate of John Russell, in Sept., 1633; and as one of the deacons of the D. church. signed all acts and orders of the plantation prior to 1635; had land gr. him at D., near Savin Hill, 97 June, 1636, by which it appears that he did not go to W. with the first company. In printed Then He. of D. (pub. 1850), p. 18, under date of 17 Dec., 1635, he is granted " half an acre of ground next Mr. Stoughton's, neere the fish-house, to build him a house, with condition that if he goe away and leave the Plantation, he leave the sayd house and ground to the Plant" in paying him the chardge." In 1636, 22 June, his house is referred to (pp. 22, 23, Mixf. D.) as " where Goodman Rockwell now dwells "; and 5 July, 1636, has 8 acres given him on Indian Ilill; also (pp. 21. 30), allusion is made to his "lott in the common." The Hist. D. states that " emigration [to Conn. ] did not entirely cease until 1637; many were de- tained a year or two in disposing of their property." The fact that Mr. R. had a home-lot assigned to him at D., 17 Dec., 1635; that, 27 June, 1636, he was occupy. ing it; that his lot on the common is referred to 5 July, same year, and that Sacres of upland additional was gr. him at same time; and that, 2 Jan., 1637, another act Was passed as to where his 8 acres should be taken up. all go to show that he did not go with the Warham party from D. in the spring of 1636. It is prob, that he went in the spring of 1637, since no mention of him occurs after 2 Jan., 1637, in the D. Toin Ree. ; nor does his name occur in the division of lands " in the Neck and Cowes Pasture," 18 Mch., 1637. Savage, also, says that he was at W. "in its ser- ond year," 1637. llis early death, 15 May, 1640, leaves no record at W. designa- ting him as a deacon of the Ch. there .* Ilis wid. m.
