He early developed a great love of books, and when only 16 commeneed to teach in the district schools, alternately attending the Wesleyan Acad. at Wilbraham, Mass., and Newbury Seminary, Vt., until at 18 years of age he was nearly fitted for college. During the winter of 1837 8 he taught a large school in his native town, where many of his pupils were okler than himself. Vis- iting Trenton, N. before entering college, he formed the acquaintance of Dr. Nath'l Brown, a dentist of that city; and this, together with the fact of his own kinship to two other then prominent dentists - one, Dr. IT. HI. Hayden, formerly of Windsor, Conn., but then a prominent professor and lecturer in the dental art; the other, Dr. Horace Wells, the discoverer of anesthesia, and an esteemed dentist in Hartford, Conn .- inspired young Kingsbury with special interest in their profession. Ile became a student with Dr. Brown, at the same time continuing to teach in Trenton, and applied him- self so studiously to the study and practice of his chosen profession, that, in the spring of 1839 he relinquished his engagements as a teacher and fairly embarked upon his life-work. Ilis keen mind eagerly seized upon every improvement in the dental art that was suggested; and he was probably the first dentist who success- fully applied an electrical current to alleviate the pain of aching teeth. In the me- chanical department of dental work he speedily made himself proficient, and spent a year or so in New England in perfecting himself in classical and natural science studies, with a purpose of securing a college course. Disappointed, ultimately. in this, he opened an office in Bordentown, N. J., in the spring of 1841, and in the fall of same year seized upon a good opening and rem. to Philadelphia, where he soon attained a fine practice. In 1842, yielding to a conviction of duty which had stead- ily been growing upon him since his conversion at the age of 15, he entered the Meth. ministry, united with the N. J. Ann. Conference, and was assigned to Had- donfield, N. J .. But malarial and bronchial troubles so completely shattered his system that he was professionally admonished never to resume pulpit labor; and, after three years at HI., he rem. to Mt. Holly, N. J., where he resumed his dental practice and also studied medicine, graduating from the Philadelphia College of Medicine. In 1857, after 13 years resid, at Mt. Holley, he rem. again to Philadel- phia, where he has since established himself in a high position in his chosen depart- ment of work. He was active in the founding (1863) of the Phila. Dental College. in which he now holds the chair of dental physiology and operative dentistry, and of which he has been (since his resignation of its active duties) Emeritus Professor. IJe helped to org. the Am. Dental Assoc'n, the Odentographic Society of Penn., of which he was the first vice-pres. and its second pres. : is a memb. of Penn. Assoc'n of Surgeon Dentists, and of Acad. of Nat. Sciences. In 1867 he took a long and leisurely tour of Europe, and had many and strong inducements held ont to him to remain and practice abroad. While in Damascus, the celebrated Abd-el-Kader de- sired his services, but for want of dental instruments he was obliged to decline. llis published essays in the line of his specialty (mostly contributed to Dental Cox- mos) have been numerous and valuable.
