Indge Griswold's nature is such that he could not long br inactive or nninterested in the public INTairs of any community in which he dwells, In Cleveland he was active in the establishment of the (love and Law Library, of which, for many years. he was president; he is a member of the cleveland Historical society, which, in i > regular series, has published some of his valuable contributions. He was elposen to give the t'entem ist oration at Close land. which was an eminently eloquent production; and. amid al his professional and judicial duties. has always found fine for a wide scope of literary and general study. His political address. en cially those on the second election of Lincoln and Grant, and that delivered at the Garfichl election. were meubels of political discussion. As a judge. he commanded the respect of all by his learning and impartiality: as a lawyer he is distinguished by his integrity and ability, and as a citizen for lib- era ity and devotion to the highest public interest.

HARPER. (Information gleaned from Windsor Town Rec., East Windsor Prob. Rec., family Bibles, State Library MSS., etc., by RUTH T. SPERRY of E. W. Ilin; and from communications of Mr. CHARLES BARTLETT, Windsorville, Conn. Arranged by Il. R. S.) From 1720 to 1765 appear upon records the names of JAMES, JOSEPH, and (from 1747-'54) JonN Harper, who were undoubtedly of North-of-Ireland origin, and probably brothers, On E. W. tax lists, 1743, Joseph Harper pays for 3 heads, and tax of $79; in 1752, 3 hds .; 1747, John Harper pays for 1 head; 1752, for 2 hds .; 1765, Joseph, James, and Joseph, Jr., are on the lists.
JOHN and JOSEPH (and probably JAMES), were the sons of JAMES HARPER, who (acc. to Hist. Delevure Co., N. Y.) emigrated from County Derry, Ireland, arriving in Casco Bay, in the Province of Maine, October, 1720, where he settled. The out- break of Indian hostilities, however, forced him to remove, with his family, to Bos- ton, his youngest son, John, remaining for the defense of the Province, and con- tinuing in the service about 3 years and 8 months. This Joux, after his discharge, rem. to Boston, thence to Hopkinton, Mass,, where he m. 8 Nov., 1728, Abigail Montgomery; rem. thence to Nodell's Island, near Boston; rem. in 1741 (as is supposed) to Middletown, Conn .; 1747. rem. to (E.) Windsor, Conn., from whence, in 1754, they rem. to Cherry Valley, Albany County, N. Y., where they purchased, cleared, and cultivated a farm. This family were most intelligent, and eminently patriotic; and, after the War of the Revolution, all became prominent in their respective localities. Children (b, near Boston) :
1. William, b. 11 Sept., 1729; was a member of the Provincial Congress; one of the Judges of Mont- gomery County, and, after the County of Otsego was formed, was app. one of its Associate Judges; also member of N. Y. Assembly from Tryon l'a, 1551, 1752, 1754; and from Montgomery County for 1685 9. His long and useful life ended at the nur of 87, at his res .. Milford, Otsego Co., N. Y. From N. Y. Calendar MS. we learn that he was app. to deliver clothing to troops, and was mem- ber of a committee app. to make essny's in mann- facturing lead, gun-flints, and sulphur. [1760. 2. James. b. 26 Mch., 1731: d. of small-pox 22 Mch.,
3. Mary, h. 23 Jan., 1,33; m. John Moore, after- wards a member of the Committee of Safety of Tryon co. She and her three daughters were made prisoners at the Cherry Valley mas-gere and taken to Niagara by Brant, where they for- tunately found friends to protect, and afterward to restore them to their home.
4. John (Col.), b. 31 May, 1731. FAM. 2.
5. Margaret, b. 7 Feb., 1740).
6. Joseph, b. Middletown, Conn. (1710. 17); fought bravely in the frontier war; was a member of the Committee of Safety of Harpersfield, N. Y .; is probably the Joseph who was recommended by William Harper to the New York Commitire of Arrangements in the Revol. War (.V. ). ('alender Ilist. MS., 11. 16) for position as lieu- tenant in Capt. MrKean's company: saying that he had served in last campaign as volunteer at his own expense on purpose to qualify himself for the service. Joseph Harper was app. Ensign, 1266. N. Y Cubader Hist. MS., 11. 15, 19. He emigrated to Ohio with his bra. Alexander, and founded The town of Harpersfield in that State.
7. Alexander (Capt. ), b. Middletown. Conn. (1240 47). was after his brother (Co). John) the most fearless and sagarions of the family who came to Harpers- field, anul was nearly as prominent in the various affairs which border warfare entailed upon them as his more celebrated brother. In April. 1750, he was sent in command of 14 men, on a scont, from Schoharie to Harpersfield. for the purpose of mak ing a quantity of maple sugar and of watching certain disaffected persons in those parts. This party was surprised by Brant and his Indians. Some were killed, others taken prisoners to Ning- ara, where Capt. H. fortunately found relatives among the prisoners, who saved him from many of the miseries his fellows were made to suffer, and, after three years of unntterable suffering. from which some died, the survivors were released. after peare was declared.
The first town inceting, after the town was org. under the State law, Apl. 1, 1255, was heldl at Capt. Alexander's house, and he was chosen treasurer. Ir was Justier of the Peace, 1788, and probably earlier; was interested in the org. of the first (Pres.) church: kept the first inn as early as 1786 or '87, at the Center; rem, to Ohio with his bro. in-law, Wmn. MeFarland, and his brother Joseph, and founded the town of Harpersfield in that State.
