1" Died at Windsor, on the 10th inst., after a short and painful illness, James Ilooker, Esq., in the 61th year of his age. He was a man whom nature had en- dowed with brilliant talents. He was easy and sociable in his manners; polite with- out affectation; the friend and benefactor of the poor, and ready at all times to plead the cause of the oppressed, and to redress the wrongs of the widow and fatherless. Noble and generous in his disposition, he disdained whatever favored of contracted parsimony. He was a firm and liberal supporter of religious institutions, and of whatever was conducive of public utility. To these he devoted much of his time without pecuniary reward, and cheerfully aided them by liberal donations. In his family he was an affectionate husband, and a kind and tender parent; and in all his professions a sincere friend. In his death the public are deprived of a great bene- factor, the rich and poor mourn, but to his afflicted widow and eight children the

* JAMES HOOKER STRONG WAS appointed midshipman in the U. S. Navy in 1-29. By regular couter of promotion he became a commander in 1561, and as such he took an active part in the late war, At the Battle of Mubile Bay. August 5. 1561. he commanded the steam sloop of war Monongahela, and after passing the forts, while the Best was steaming up the bay, seeing the rebel ram Tennessee approaching to attack the Bag-hip The tford. Commander Strong turned his wooden ships out of the line, and, going at full speed, ran into the iron-elad ram, striking her fairly and giving her a staggering blow, which, however, also ern-bed the Monongahela's stern and head As his ship swing around, after striking the ram, he gave the iron-clad a broadside of eleven-inch solid shot from his gone, with, however, but little effect. Other ships, following him example, also attacked the ram in similar manner, while the guns of the ram were doing great execution among the fleet. Having gained a sufficient distance for effective work, Commander Strong again turned his ship toward the enemy, and skillfully working his way among the surrounding ship-, ran her into the ram under a full head of steam. He had again turned his badly battered ship, and was about to run into the iron-clad ram a third time, when her flag was hanled down, and she surrendered to the fleet, disabled and almost destroyed by the tremendous assaults which she had received.
