New York city; and for several years (from 1872) Assistant to the Professor of Practice of Medicine in Medi cal Department, I'niversity City of New York, in which institution, at time of his death, he held the Chair of Clinical Medicine. Ile rose rapidly to prominence in lis profession, both in city and State; at time of his death was Visiting Physician to Bellevue Hospital, and had been for some years President of the Alumni of the Medical Department of the University. He died in New York city. 9 March, 1888. at a point in his career where, "by his talents, his industry, and his persistent effort, he had reached a position honorable and honored among the lights of his profession."

Daniel (Capt.). first person of this name on Windsor records, was born at Reading, Mass., 1 June, 1678, and was s. of Daniel and Mary Eaton, and gd. son of William E., an early settler of R., who came from Staple, Co. Kent, Eng. Capt. Daniel res. for some time in Lynn, Mass .; was gr. Id. in Lambstown (now Hardwick), Mass .. which land he sold to Thomas Powers of Worcester, the deed dated at Windsor, Conn., Apl., 1734. Ile res, some yrs, in Toland, Conn .. perhaps having gone there with his chier bro. William, about 1713, 16. His family rec. is gleaned partly from books at Salem and Lynn, Mass., and partly from those at Tolland, Conn. He m. FAM. 2. Asahel Knowlton (A.M., M.D.) (Joshua, Josiuk1), grad. A. M. at Ham. Coll., N. Y .; was for some years principal of the academies at Little Falls and Fre- donia, N. Y .; afterwards Prof. of Chemistry at Eclectic Med. College, Rochester, N. Y .: sett. in N. Y. city as an analytical chemist; discovered and patented a process for making steel directly from the iron ore, and also a quick process for tanning leather. llis attention becoming attracted to the gold mines of North Carolina, he invented and patented several improved processes of amalgamation and separation. Shortly after, in connection with Charles C. Spencer of Canastota, N. Y., he entered into the mfre. of optical instruments, microscopes, telescopes, etc., at that place, and constructed for the Litchfield Observatory, Hamilton Coll., its large telescope, then the largest ever mfd. in this conntry. In 1856 he was engag. in N. Y. city in the refining of kerosene from W. Penn. and E. Ohio coals - this being before the discovery of petroleum. During the early part of the Civil War he was largely en- gaged in the preparation (by processes of his own invention) of the peculiar green and other colored inks required in the printing of the Government greenbacks. From 1874 to '77 he was engag. in Montana Territory in gold and silver mining, for which he perfected new processes and machinery. Ret., 1877, to Brooklyn, N. Y., he invent. a new kind of prism, using bisulphide of carbon, and also a direct-vision spectroscope. He was an early inventor in the telephone line, and has, of late yrs., bven actively engaged in electrical inventions and ifre., especially that of electric storage-batteries. Thoroughly versed in the science of chemistry, as well as geol- ogy, metallurgy, and optics, he has enjoyed a wide range of practical observation and experience, and as an expert in matters of medical jurisprudence has also done the State some service.
