FAM. 36. Frederic Ellsworth "" (Gen.) (Ellsworth,? Col. Oliver, Nath'l," Dr. Sam'l,6 Rec. Sim'l,5 Timo.,4 Rer. Rich.," Thos. 2 John 1). FREDERIC ELLSWORTH MATHER, son of Ellsworth and Lanra ( Wolcott) Mather, was born in Windsor, Conn., May, 1809, in the homestead of Col. Oliver Mather, his paternal grandfather. Ilis father died 23 Dec., 1814; his mother re-married 12 Nov., 1816, and the eare and support of the boy was assumed by his grandfather.
The Colonel was an extensive and prosperous farmer, and, in accord with New England thrift, the boy " did the chores." As he grew in years and strength he became familiar with all the farm industries. To the experience and discipline of such farin life he eredits his physical vigor and robust health. His book-learning was mainly that of the district school, though in later years he at times attended the Academy. Always a diligent scholar, in the Academy he studied the rudiments of both Latin and Greek, faintly hoping that he might at some time pursue a full collegiate and professional course.
In November, 1829, he arranged with the Rev. Mr. Perkins of Amherst, Mass., for his aid as tutor, in fitting for college. In January, 1831, he was admitted to the Sophomore class in Yale - a class which he entered before he commenced with his preparations. Under such circumstances it was not casy at first to maintain a satisfactory class standing; but he persevered, and graduated honorably in 1833, and afterwards received the degree of A. M.
Having selected the Law as his profession, he read one year in Hartford (in the offices of Gov. Ellsworth and Judge Parsons), and another year in the Vale Law School. In 1835, when expecting to go West, he received a proposition to enter at law office in the city of New York. Among others with whom he advised on the proposition was his kinsman, Erastus Ellsworth, a retired New York merchant, who contented himself with the remark, "New York is a great business field, and should you conclude to go there, with industry, honesty, and economy, you will succeed."
