Mr. William Phelps Prior, to whose correspondence with Mr. O. S. Phelps (commenced in 1860 and since his death continued by his sons) we are indebted for these facts, resided for over 30 yrs, at Vevay, Canton de Vaud, Switzerland; and in St. Martin's church there is a monument, erected in 1882, bearing this inscription: " In Memoriam | of him who, being with Andrew BRoreuros, joint Clerk of the Court | which tried and condemned CHARLEs the First of ENGLAND, | had such zeal to accept the full responsibility of his act, | that he signed each record with his full name, | JOHN PHELPS. He came to Vevay and died, like the associates whose memorials [ are about us, an exile in the cause of human freedom." \ "This stone is placed at the request of WM. WALTER PHELPS of New Jersey, | and CHARLES A. Pukurs of Massachusetts, | Descendants from across the sea." Phelps gravestones are found beside the old abbey church of Tewkesbury, in Porlock, Somerset- shire, Staffordshire, and other parts of England.
WILLIAM and RICHARD, sons of William on the above baptismal record, to- gether with GEORGE, who (though his baptism is not found on the Tewkesbury parish register) is believed to have been their brother, came to Dorchester, New England, in the Mary and John, in 1930. Of RICHARD, the youngest of the three bro's, we have this record: " Richard Phelps, 17 years ofl, embarked for the Islands of Barbadoes, 2 May, 1635, in the ship .I cander, Capt. Birch, and Gilbert Grimes, master." And of him we hear no more. WILLIAM, b. 1599, and GEORGE, b. about 1605, hecame the ancestors of the larger proportion of the American families of Phelps.
