" Anna Holman, John Dickerman, 29 ? mo 44; Anna Bellindge 20 8 mo 44, (to m' Penniman) Samuel Harnswoorth 27 8 mo 41."
The three latter items are evidently records of marriages.
" Thomas Stoughton, Sent died at W. 25 March, 1661."- W. Ree. et O. C. R
Some of his descendants call Mr. Stoughton " Rev.," and say that he was a deposed minister: and there is a record in Mass, Col. Rec. of a Thomas S. being fined for solemnizing a marriage without proper authority; and we learn from researches made (1891) by Mr. FRANK FARNSWORTH STARR, the genealogist, that a Thomas Stoughton was presented with the living of Coggeshall Church, 12 Dec., 1600, and was deprived of the same, probably for non conformity, in 1606.
Whether this Thomas, Sr., was the Rev. Thomas above referred to, and whether he and Rer John (see p. 129, were brothers; or whether the Rev. Joux of London, and "Ancient " Thomas of Dorchester and Windsor, and Col. ISRAEL of Dorchester, were sons of Thomas, Sr., we confess ourselves unable to decide. Bul our opinion is in favor of the latter ; and we have accordingly so arranged our statement of his children. C'h. (b. in England) :
1. Johnit Rev. rof Aldermanbury, London, see p. 722. the following record, taken by Mr. F. F. STARR 2. Thomas ("Ancient " or Ensign). of Dorchester and Windsor. FAM 2. from the parish record of Coggeshall Church, prob. applies: " 1602. February 18. Israel Stoughton, son 3. Israel (Col.), of Dorchester. Mass., and to whom of Thomas [ then rector of the parish] baptized."
THOMAS STOUGHTON [Senior] had gr. him. 11 JJan., 1640, from the Plantation, " his home lott, with meadow addjoining 52 acres, more or less, his meadow 25 acres in bredth next the River 39 Rod, next the upland 53 rod and a half, by vertue of exch. with Thos, Gunn, the upland next the meadow in bredth 34 Rod and a half, next the street 37 Rod, and on the West side of the way, 24 Rod 'and half. Towards Pine Meadow 69 acres more or less in bredth 69 Rod, in Length Eight Score, bd. N. by John Hoskins, Sth. by Thos. Gunn. "- Windsor Town Rer. This is evidently the property which he made over to his s. Thomas, 5 July, 1645, and which we have erroneously attributed (p. 166, Vol. I), to the latter as a grant to him from the town.
Thomas Stoughton, Sen., d. 25 Mch., 1661 .- W. Rer. - Stoughton, bu. 31 May, 1652. - W. Rec.
FAM. 2. Thomas' (Ancient, or Ensign * ), (Mr. Thox.,' Rer. Thos, of Cogge shell), b. Eng .: came to D., 1630-33, and to Windsor, 1640, with his father; rer'd there by deed from his father, in 1615, the ppy. gr. to the latter by the town, except a home lot, etc ..
* I see no reason why the term " Ensign," like any other title, may not have been used to designate more than one Thomas Stoughton The man who was Ensign in Mass, may not have held that rank in a train band in Conn., but his son may, and in my opinion did. I do not hold that Ensign Thomas Stoughton was alway one and the same man, any more than Thomas S. without a prefix. The Thomas s. who m. Mary Farnsworth was, I believe, son of Mr. or Ens, Thos, S. of Dorchester in 1630, Windsor 1645; and gd. s.

"Thomas Stoughton of Wyndsor, and Mary Wadsworth [dan. of William ] weare married Nov. 30th, 1455."- Land le. 11. Secy State's Off., Hartford. Thomas Stoughton was evidently a man of property and of social distinction, and the builder and first occupant of the " Old Stoughton House," or " Stoughton," or "Stone Fort," pictured and described on page 141 of our first volume.
