FAM. 65. John Book (Rev.) (Eliku," Lient. Abm.," Capt. Abm., Mathil,3 Nuth1,2 Humphrey1), after death of his gd. - father, Lient. Abraham, lived with his uncles in Colebrook and Canaan, from spring of 1814 to that of 1817, when (a. 10) he was placed by his father at the academy at Windsor, Con .; nine years later he was placed at a private school in Lexington, Ga., and soon entered the Georgia U'niver- sity at Athens, Ga., from which he grad. 1825. Having studied law considerably during his senior yr., he was, in 1825, admitted to the bar of that State, but soon quit the law to prepare for the ministry, and, by teaching, procured the means to enter the Theol. Instit. at Princeton, N.L .; grad. there in 1529. Determining to be a missionary to Borneo, and Hansa, Africa, he was ord., together with Rev. Mr. Joseph Barr, and started on their intended work. Mr. Barr, however, being cut off by cholera while awaiting the arrival of the ship which was to convey them to their destination, Mr. Piney proceeded alone, but the fatigues of the long and ardnous journey so broke his health as to compel his return to America in 1833. In the fall of that year, however, with nine missionary companions, he went to Monrovia, which he reached Jan., 1834. On the eve of his leaving the U. S., he was chosen as the agent of the Am. Colonization Soc., and thus became, er officio, acting Gov. of the Colony of Liberia. At the same time, the early death of certain missionaries so discouraged the Am. Bd. of Foreign Miss., that they consented to accede to the proposal of the A. C. S. to suspend their missions awhile and have Mr. P. commis- sioned as Governor of the colony. Coincident with this commission, Mr. P re- ceived another from the U. S. Gov't as agent for recaptured Africans. His views were not in accordance with those of the two boards; and, though circumstances obliged him to retain the authority conferred upon him until relieved by a succes- sor, he promptly declined the app't permanently. Finally, the heavy cares and anxieties of his position, as well as repeated attacks of African fever, so under- mined his health as to necessitate his return to the U. S. in the fall of 1835. From that time until 1862, with the exception of a little more than a year's settled pastor- ate over the Pres. Ch. at Washington, Pa .. Mr. P.'s energies and labors were spent in the service of the Pa and N. Y. Col. Societies, as corr, weretary, meantime, how- ever, visiting Liberia again in 1840 and 1855, on special missions. In 1862 he was app. Consul-Gen. for the Republic of Liberia for the U. S. Ile d. at his home near Ocala, Fla, 25 Dee., 182. 2. 36. Hem. Ellen Agnes Seward of Guilford, t'onn. PORTER. [Mr. HENRY PORTER ANDREWS of Saratoga, N. Y., has in press (1891) a Girneal, of the Dest. of John Porter from Warwickshire, Eng., to Windsor, Conn., 1639, in the male and female lines, a vol. of 8:30 pp., besides indexes. This work we have not seen. Mr. A. had previously (1882) pub, a geneal, of Desc. of Col. John Porter of Salisbury, l'unn., from which we have used a few items, bracketed thus [ 1.1

" John, Porter, Sr., came from Eng. and settled here in Windsor in 1639."- O.C.R. According to statements furnished by HENRY D. WHITE, Esq., of New Haven, C'onn., he came to New England with wife and nine children from Felsted, County Essex. Eng., probably in the ship Susan and Ellen, 17 July, 1638, and in company with his brother-in-law, Joseph Loomis- see Loomis. In the Parish Register of Messing, County Essex, Eng., is the following rec. of mar .: " 1620, Oct. 18. John Porter of Felsted & Anna White of Messing." Anna, as we find from the Messing Parish Register, was bp. 13 July, 1600, and was the dan, of Rob't White of M., by his wife, Bridget (dan, of William) Allgar of Shalford, County Essex, and was probably the sister of Mary White of M., who m. Joseph Loomis, the emigrant ancestor of the Windsor family of that name (ser Loomis, p. 432). Another sister. Elizabeth White, m. ? Nov., 1616, William Goodwin of Ilifd., and the three are thought to have been the sisters of Elder John White, though this is not yet proven. Both the Loomis and Goodwin marriages are from the Shalford Parish Register.

He had land grant in Windsor (see p. 164, Vol. I); was appointed constable. 1639/40; juror. 1610; grand-juror, 1613; deputy to General Court., 1646 and '47. and a prominent man in the community. He "d. 21 and was bu. 22 April, 1648" (": " ); left a large est. His will is given in Trumbull's Col. Rec. Conn. "John Porter, Sen'rs, wife " d. 1647. - O. C. R. Ch. (first 9b. Eng. ):
