Sujf.), he res. on that part of Northampton Road called " Old Street." Dr. Olmsted's ancestors on both sides for several generations were residents of Enfield, and there he received his early education, supplemented by a course of study at the Westfiehl Academy, after which he was for several years in the office and under the instruction of Dr. Erastus Edgerton Marey, then of Hartford. His degree of M.D. was conferred by the University of New York, from which he graduated with the highest honors in 1843. Ile commenced the practice of his profession in Nyack, N. Y., but after a few months rem., Feb., 1844, upon the death of Dr. William Daniels, to Warehouse Point, Conn., where he remained until his death. Ile was the founder of the " Hartford County North Medical Association," and was elected a Fellow of the Connecticut Medical Society in 1856. In the Legislature of 1853 he represented the second Senatorial district, and was, as a staunch Democrat, always interested in political questions.
On 2 June, 1852, he married Sarah Maria (dau. Wm. and Maria Holkinx) Barnes, who d. 25 Sept., 1868-[sce Barnes, p. 60, this Vol. ]. W. by a celebrated athlete, who had come all the way from Virginia to test their relative strength; O. was disinclined to the trial, but, finding the Virginian persistent, finally accepted; and, adroitly remarking that a drink of cider would be refreshing before engaging in such a contest, led the way to a cider-press on his farm, and raising one of the filled barrels to his lips with astounding ease, wished good health to his visitor, took a good, long draught from its bung, and politely handed it to the Virginian. The latter, amazed, replied that he would never drink with the devil, for no man could, of his own unaided strength, do what (. had done; and re- turned home without the combat he had so greatly desired.
