Immediately after leaving college, he became a partner in his father's extensive business, and, like him, a man of public cares and offices. Ile was clerk and ireas, of the Eccl. Soc., and prob. an officer in the militia. It is quite probable that he com- manded the Connecticut, in the affair on Lake Champlain, in 1776 (see Conn. Much of his service during the Revol. was done at home, in the exe- ention of responsible duties which were entrusted to him by the public authority. In 1799 and 1800 he was U. S. Collector for the 5th Collect. Dist. of Conn., and for many years a Justice of the Peace, sue- ceeding his father-in-law, Judge Erastus Wolcott, prob, about 1791 5; also, a memb. of Conn. Assem- bly 1797 and 1811. He res, and d. in his father's old mansion, respected by all. We append a copy of a letter written by him to his father, while a student in college:

" Honored Sr. Mr. Lyman gave me your Present the last week for which im extremely thankful to you for: & hope and praye to Retain with Gratitude the solemn warnings & pions injune- tions therein laid Down, as knowing they come from one who always is consulting my Interest and aiming at my good. Thanked be Heaven that ive such kind Parents to take Care of me, and take me by the hand & lead me through the various viciffitudes and Changes we all meet with here while in this transitory & probationary State; & lead me in virtue's Paths & fix me in the Road both for this & a future Life, & as it were, say, follow my Direction, & Everlasting peace will be your happy Lot when you Quit and bid adieu to these triffling Scenes.

" Am sensible my Continnence at my Alma Mater is but short; the Rotation of a few Months will finish the short four years, which have glided so imperceptibly, & will fix me in an untried State, if alive,- can't but Reflect often upon my Departing from this delightsome seat where I received my Edu- cation, where I enjoyed the best advantages & most peruliar Privileges a Rational Being can Desire, & that now it stands me in hand to improve every Moment to the best Purpose; now is the only time to lay a stable foundation for future usefulness, for being an Honor to the Place of my Education, a Comfort to my Parents & serviceable to my Friends, at the completion of my Residence at the seat of the Mufes. Should be very glad of a Cheese if it co'd he conveniently sent me, as our Commons are poor. Shall not want that Cherry yon Reserved for me before varaney, as all the Scholars have unanimously agreed not to Drink any foreign spiritons Liquors any more, a Scheme proposed by Mr. Woodbull & seconded by the other Tutors & the scholars in suceffion; there was no Compulsion, but all a voluntary Act. Sho'd be very glad for some more Money, as my former Supply is almost exhausted; have been sorely afflicted with a whitton on my Thumb the week Past, & the Pain still increases so that I take no Quiet Day nor Night; my Duty to my Honoured Mamma & love to Siffer concludes all that's Desired by

He was a man of decided character and resolution, and yet to all appearance wal- governed by a decided sense of justice and right, and beyond that he could not be moved. 1le and his brother Matthew, living in the same house, had some differences of judgment, and the result was that all friendly communication eca-ed between them; they did not speak to each other. There were no words; no perpetual disturbance; cach thought the other wrong, and there the matter ended. Daniel was tax collector; he wonkl put his brother's tax bill through the key-hole in the door into Mat- thew's room, and Matthew would return the money by the same 'express. '
