Benerliet, in his History of American Baptists, Vol. 1, pp. 192 195, gives a pretty full account of the chest and largest branch of the family (i. e. of Joseph Jenks. S., by his Ist marriage), from whom tien. Ches, denke was descended.

The connection between the English line and the founder of the American family had not been clearly auferia ned ad later as 185, by the late Rev. William denke, D. H., of Boston, Mass., who gathered much inter. esting matter in tracing the deseen of the family, not only in this country, but also in England among ances- tral records. The name appears to have originated with Robert enke of Wolverton (Manor) in the parish of Katon-under- Eywindt, Shropshire, England, as early as ahont 1330, in the reign of Edward the Third. This sendeman was the son of Jenkyn Cambres of that place, and of Dorothy, a daughter and co-heiress of Sir Walter C'olly ny (Knight) of Church Stretton in the same county. From Robert (or John, as other anthority has its the ancestry is traceable as far upward as Welch annat- and bardie pedigree are carried, in the house of Elystan Gloddrydd. A Wolverton the name continued for ten direct descents, and families branched off from this stork. Herbert Jet kes. Esquire (grand-on of Herbert Westphaling. Bishop of Hereford, and unele of the truly primitive sector of Harley and Kenley, the Key Benjamin Jenks, author of well-known Prayers, Meditations, and other pion- work-, possessed Wolverton in about 1690, and it descended to his heirs, by a daughter The me, the Jenkeses of England can trave their descent through the royal line of Wales, to Vor- ligern, King of Britain, A.D) 150.

From this time until his death, except a few years spent in New York city in the book business, he held the position of treas., first in the B. & I., then in the C. C. C. & I., and finally in the 1. & St. L. R. R., and also served two years in the State logis- lature. In the last few years of his life he was not engaged in business, but dle- voted mueh of his time to working up the genealogy of his family and related Old Windsor families, the readers of this edition of Ancient Windsor being much in- debted to him for the completeness of the King, Nemberry, Ellsworth, Wolcott, and other families. A lover of history and antiquities of all kinds, his home was filled with many relics of early Windsor days. An honest man, upright, faithful in the discharge of every duty, he was beloved by all who knew him, and has left the priceless legacy of a good name to his children.
