ELI TERRY. b. So. W., Conn., 13 Apl., 1722, learned the art of clock and watch making and that of engraving on metal, of Daniel Burnap of Hartford; also from Thomas Howland of Norwich, Conn., a native of London and a noted watch and clock maker. In 1793 he settled at Plymouth, Conn., and engaged in repairing clocks and watches, engraving on metal, selling spectacles, etc. In 150; he received Trom a clock maker in Waterbury, Conn .. a contract (to be completed in three years) for making 4,000 thirty-hour wooden clocks, with seconds pendulumns the dial and hands inchuled, at $4 apiece. Clock manufacturers at that date made the eight- clay English brass clocks and thirty-hour wood clocks - both kinds, as a general rule, having pendulums beating seconds; and in Plymouth (now Thomaston), Conn., and at Salem Bridge (now Naugatuck), Conn., there were manufacturers of these so-called English brass clocks. During the performance of his contract Mr. Terry conceived the idea of making a thirty-hour Good clock with half seconds pendulum for general use, which would be much less expensive than the half-seconds clocks of cast brass - the clock having substantially the movement of the thirty-hour wood clock with a seconds pendulum, the escapement wheel having sixty instead of thirty to adapt it to a short half-seconds pendulum - the cord passing upward and over a pulley on the inside of the top of the case and down around a pulley attached to the weight, and back to the top of the case where it was fastened. The front plate of the frame was an open plate, and the clock had no dial, but the tig- ures to indicate the time were painted on the glass in the sash of the case.
