J., continuing there until the Jun. year, when poor health compelling him to engage in more active business, he entered the service of Wiley & Putnam, importers and publishers, of N. Y., in the early part of 1846, where he re- mained till elected in Feh., 1849, Librarian of the Mercantile Lib. Association of the City of New York. This position he occupied for seventeen years, during which he went abroad, visiting most of the large libraries of Great Britain and the Continent. He resigned the office of Librarian in 1866. and was for some time sec'y of the N. Y. Prod. Exch. ; be then served most acceptably under Mayor Hewett as Comp- troller of the city of New York, since which he has been engaged in the real estate business there. Mr. Grant was one of the founders of the N. Y. Geneal. and Biog. Society of N. Y. in 1869, and for many years chairman of its Publication Committee. Ile resides at Nyack, Rockland Co., N. Y.
