Y. city with his sons; he was an ardent patriot, and vol. from Watertown for the defense of Sackett's Harbor in War of 1812. llis life was one of much vicissitude and trial, but his latter days were eminently peaceful and happy. His piety was even and cheerful, and he was a daily student of the Bible. Remarkably fond of music, he often astonished his friends, even at the age of 80, by the volume and purity of voice with which he would sing the songs of other days. He d. at Brooklyn, N. ELIJAH HENTER OWEN (firm of Owen, Root & Childs, dry goods), was one of the leading merchants and influential business men of his day in Htfd., taking a large and active part in charitable and business enterprises. His private means and busi- ness connection were used by Gov. Buckingham early in 1861, and through the war, for purchases of equipments for the Conn. troops -and it was mainly due to his energy and skill that the Conn. men were the first to reach the ficht with tents and field equipments fit for campaigning.
The original subscription for the Kansas rifles, marked " pd." in Mr. Owen's well-known autograph hand, which also signed the second subscription for Day, Owen & Co., is in the possession of the Conn. Historical Soc. The list of names and date prove that something had occurred prior to the so-called " Topeka mur- ders" which led the thinking men, tirst merchants, good deacons, and leading citizens of Hartford, as well as Boston and New Haven, to furnish John Brown. Owen Brown, and Owen Lovejoy with Sharps' rifles. Mr. Owen probably did not know that John Brown was a distant cousin, but took an interest in Brown's ven. ture as an original abolitionist and stockholder in the Kansas Emigrant Aid Society. Mr Owen was remarkable for personal uprightness no less than for the generous and wise aid and advice which he extended to young men of his own profession especially. Academy, and one year later, Middlebury Coll., whence he grad. 1828, and same autumn And. Theol. Sem., whence he grad 1831; was licensed to preach by the So. Suffolk Cong. Assoc., Boston, Mass .; ord. by N. Y. Third Presbytery in Oct., 1831. from which time, until spring of 1835, he was Sec. of Pres. Educ. Soc., from which he resigned to take charge of the Cornelius Institute, for the preparation of young men for the ministry; after which he rec'd and declined a call to the Midd. Coll., as Prof. of Greek and Latin. The Univ. of N. Y. City conferred the degree of D.D. upon him, and (1849) he was elected Prof. of Ancient Languages in N. Y. Free Academy: and. in 1853, vice .- pres. of the same. He d. 18 Apl., 1869. He was an extensive author in classical literature; among his works were commentaries on the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, and on the Acts of the Apostles; also a series of classical school books, comprising a Greek Reader, Xenophon's Anabasis, and Cyropedia, Homer's Hliad and Odyssey, Thucydides, etc., all of great value, and widely used.
