In 1814 he perfected a thirty hour wood clock of a construction entirely new, both the time and the clock being so radically different that it was really a new manufacture. This comprised tre notable inventions, one the placing of the dial works between the plates of the frame instead of between the front plate and dial; the other, the mounting of the verge on a steel pin inserted in one end of a short arm, a screw passing through the other end into the front plate. The manufacture of this new clock of Mr. T.'s at once became a very extensive industry, and it so superseded the & second clock, made of brass, that that industry perished. It sup- plied the American market and export demand for clocks for a quarter of a cen- tury. But, when in the progress of art sheet metal began to be manufactured, and rolled brass became an article of commerce, sheet metal clocks began to be made. with wire pinions; and, being much less expensive, they in turn superseded the wooden clocks. To all classes of clocks, whether made of brass, wood, sheet metal, or cast metal, Mr. Terry'> two inventions, before mentioned, were adaptable, and are to be found in nearly every clock made in America as well as in many of foreign make.
Mr T. did not confine himself to making low-priced clocks for general use, but made also fine brass clocks, as regulators for watchmakers; also tower clocks, which were novel, consisting of three parts, viz. : a time part, a part to move the hands, and the striking part, by which manner of construction the time part was unaffected by the action of wind and weather on the hands; the time part could also be placed in any part of the building desired, with a dial and handle attached and connected to the parts in the tower by a wire. The tower clock which he made for the city of New Haven in 1826, showing both men and apparent time. was a notable example of his skill, and gave rise to a memorable controversy among the citizens and learned pundits of that college-town as to which was the true or proper time to be kept.

THE THOMPSON FAMILY.
THOMPSON. (Arranged by IT. R. S. from materials collected by Miss RUTH THOMPSON SPERRY of East Windsor Hill, Conn.)
Family traditions inform us that WILLIAM and MARGARET Thompson, with seven sons and two daughters, left Scotland for America about 1716, but, for some reason, tarried for a year in the Co. Derry, Ireland, where William, the father, died, enjoining his family, in his dying hours, to carry out their original plan of settling in America. Prob., abt. 1718, the widow and her children sailed in a ves- sel, one of a fleet of five, under command of Captain Temple, and bound for New England .* It is said that the voyage was so long that starvation seemed imminent, and a prayer-meeting was hell on deck to pray for divine help. As the company arose from their knees, the dead body of a sheep, or some domestic animal, was seen floating upon the sea, was secured, and its flesh averted the danger nutil land was reached.
Closely connected with the Thompson family were the families of Harper and Speir ; their farms and their graves adjoined, and it is believed that they came to America iu the same ship and from the same part of Ireland. The family Bible brought by Margaret the Emigrant was accidentally burned; nor are many records of the family to be found either in town or church records, except in deeds and on tax-lists. On the Windsor Land Rec. the earliest mention of the Thompson name is in a deed describing a certain parcel of land sold by Captain Job Ellsworth to Wil- liam, Samuel, and James Thompson, for the sum of $300 already paid in hand; said piece, or parcel, contained about 200 or 250 acres, in the town of Windsor, etc., bd. N. on Enf., E. on Jonathan Day's. S. on highway, West on John Wolcutt; deed re- corded 8 Mch., 1730/1. The Rate-Book of. Rev. Timothy Edwards, first pastor of Oil church of W., contains, in its index, the names of William, Samuel, and James Thompson, James paid a high rate, viz., 1727-1732, 11, 16, and 17 xh. "in Ric," and his brother Hugh is also referred to in these pages.
In an old account book mention is found of William, Samuel, Hugh, James, John, and Job Thompson, earliest date, 1724; also, of Joseph Harper; also of James llarper. We have referred to the close proximity of the Thompson and Speir graves. From W. Rec. we learn of " David, son of David Spier, now of Windsor, formerly of Coldrear [Coldraine?] in the Co. of Londonderry." This may give us a clue to the place of the Thompson family's temporary residence in Ireland. There is also mention in an old account book (owned by Judge John A. Stoughton) of William Campbell, who appears to have been in some way connected with the Thompsons.
These Scotch emigrants (Thompsons, Harpers, Scotts, etc.) were called proud and exclusive. Certain it is that they married mostly among themselves, and prob. lived much among themselves during the earlier generations. The Americans, also, looked rather askance upon the new comers, calling them "Trish," a term they bit- terly resented. The graves of the Thompsons are to be found mostly in Ellington and in East Windsor, on " Irish Row " (Melrose), Prior street, and Scantic.
The brave pioneer mother of the race is buried in Ellington; her tombstone bears the following: " Here byes the | Body of Mys | MARGARET TOMSON | Who Died Janry | the 20th A. D. 1952 | In the 87th Year | of Her Age." Ch. (b. Scotland):
