should have it made up to him in a farm in outland." In accordance with a previ- ous vote of the town made in 1662, that "Capt. [Benj. ] N. and his relations ' should have his father's ancient rights,'" the Court ordered that the petitioners should have " 200 acres in West lands of Windsor."
The children of Mr. Thomas Newberry, being well descended, possessed of ample means, and becoming connected by marriage. with some of the first families of Windsor, naturally assumed an honorably prominent position in the Connecticut Colony; and the family from that day on has shown a large preponderance of sol- diers, engineers, surveyors, and pioncer merchants. The merchant marine estab- lished on the Western Lakes by Oliver Newberry was the most progressive achievement of his day. The high moral character, unobtrusive generosity, and great military spirit, combined with the keen business judgment of the Newberry family, have few parallels in American family history.

Very reliable family tradition states that ou this return from the Carthagena Expedition Capt. Roger Newberry was confined to his herth with dysentery (of which thousands died), when a terrible storm arose in the Carribean Sea, so that the captain and sailors lost all hope and made ready for their impending fate by getting drunk. In this emergency, Captain Newberry went on deck, took command of the ship, put the captain and crew in confinement until they were sober, and then compelled them to navigate the ship. He remained on deck for 48 hours, till the storm abated, then went below and died. See notice of his life and death, page 244, Vol. I.

" Death is the crown of life Were death deny'd, poor man would live in vain; Were death deny'd, to live would not be life; Were death deny'd, c'en fools would wish to die; Death wounds to cure; we fall, we rise, we reign; Spring from our fetters, fasten in the skies; Where blooming Eden withers in our sight, Death gives us more than was in Eden lost."
