THE GRANT FAMILY.

" 1790, Febry 1st My Wife Dyed fof pleurisy] 10' after fo'clock in ye Evening and buried ye 3rd Day 2 o'clock afternoon " [in 69th year).
"Capt Ebenezer Grant Died on the 19th day of March. 1297 (being Sunday) at two o'clock after- noon, and buried on Tuesday next following at two o'clock afternoon, in the 91st year of his age." His second wife, maiden name Jemima Leavitt, was born 9 Nov., 1721.
[Mr. Grant became the leading merchant and citizen of Rust Windsor; and his mercantile history and that of his son. Col. Roswell, have already been alluded to on pages 706 769 of Vol. I. this work. Mr. Grant was surveyor for many years; also, was clerk of the Second Ecclesiastical Society of Windsor from 1,33 to 1767, inclusive; with Erastus Wolcott and Joel Loomis, formed the committee of three to build the new meeting-house in 1761; Mr. Grant appears to have taken the chief care. Ebenezer Grant was a deputy sheriff for a short time between the years 1745 and 1749. He held many civil offices in town, and was one of the selectmen in 1779. He had somewhat to do with the affairs of the Revolutionary War at home - just what we have been unable to determine. Was on the " Committee of Correspondence. "] He probably assisted in raising supplies, and was known as a friend to the cause. To his house, 23 July, 1777, was brought the British General Prescott, who was confined here, under guard, as the accounts would show, about a week; perhaps returned again in August. In early life Capt. Grant bore his share of the perils of the French and Indian wars. We have " An Acet. of ye Men that went upon an Expedition into ye frontiers under his Command, Dec. 19, 1743. We are happy to say these " Persons all Returned from their Expedition on Dec. 30. 1745." This Expedition was " on his Majesties Service to Deerfield."
The descendants of Ebenezer Grant still own two of his commissions; the first as Captain of the North Company or Train-band on east side of Connecticut River in the town of Windsor was signed by Jonathan Law, Oct. 19, 1742. Ilis commission as Captain of the 3d Company or Train-band of the town of Windsor was signed by Roger Wolcutt, Oct. 30, 1752 .- R. T. S.]
