THE HIGLEY FAMILY.

HENRY, James, m. Charlotte Gardner, 15 Oct., 1815 (S. B.); their ch. died 10 Jan., 1819, s. 6 mos. - S. B.

HERNE, Matthew, died 16 Dec., 1690.

[This family sketch furnished by MARY COFFIN JOHNSON of Brooklyn, N Y.]

HIGLEY, Capt. John, the American progenitor of all bearing the name in this country, came from Frimley, Surrey, England, to Windsor, in 1666, when about 17 years of age. Ilis father was Jonathan Higley, who died in 1664, and his mother, before her marriage, was Katherine Brewster, daughter of the Rev. John Brews- ter, who died in Eng. 23 Aug., 1657. They were of the lineage of the ancient Brewster family of Mayflower fame.

John Higley, born 22 July, bp. 12 Aug., 1619; m. (1) Hannah (dau. of John and Hannah Moore) Drake of Windsor, 9 Nov., 1671 (O. C. R.). He m. (2) Wid. Sarah (Strong) Bissell, dan. of Return Strong, and the grand-dau. of Rev. John Warham. Soon after his first marriage he appears to have taken up his residence upon the eastern side of "5" Great River." In 1672 Major Pyncheon hired him "to view and search for a place " for the location of a saw-mill on " Stoney River." In June of the same year he is found in the list of persons who were appointed to make some improvements upon a road upon the "east side " of the Connecticut. It is supposed that be removed with his young family for safety to the main settle- ment when the general order was given during the Indian troubles, in 1675, for the families on the eastern shore to remove "forthwith, with their cattle and grain, to the west side into places of best security."

Hle soon acquired property. On January 25, 1676, 7, his "List " is recorded 024, and his tax sixteen shillings. The following year his list was £22, and the " Rate " 148. 3d. [Hannah Higley, prob. his wife, contributed 18. 3d. to the Conn. Fund for the Relief of Poor in Other Colonies, 1676, 0.(. R.] At a town meeting held " March 5+ 14tb, 1677,8," John Higley was " granted liberty to take a parcell to hild on, 25 foot in length against ye river, and 20 foot in breadth y' other way; but. he must take after ye widow marshall has sit out her grant next after George Gris- wold." This grant was again confirmed in 1679 and was further described as a "Small parcell on the North side of the ferry by the Rivulet to build a warehouse and is in length on the top of the bank against the River, thirty foot in length downward, and in breadth twenty-four foot"; "alsoe, he has a par- cell of Land whereon he has bilt his Dweling house; the land was set out to him by his grandfather, Deacon [John] Moore; it is one acre and a half of the Land called Cowfiekl." He owned, in addition, "a parcell of woodland " deeded to him by his father-in-law, John Drake, which is described as " out of that land he [John Drake] formerly bought of Richard Lyman; it Lyes towards Hartford Bounds; he is to have out of it fifteen acres of the South end of said Lott," etc.

Ilis warehouse appears to have been the beginning of his commercial transac- tions, and proved a channel through which his genius achieved success and great business prosperity. He held the appointment of Officer of Customs, Windsor then being a port of entry. One important item in a very considerable trade which the warehouse commanded was the importation and transportation of rum from Barbadoes. From entries found in his account book, which his descendants now have in possession. the following extracts are taken :

"Aprill 25 1683. Mr. Henry Wolcott made entry of one barroll of Rum for transportation and if he did not transport it, he would pay the costom of it."

" July 10 1683. Nathaniel Bissell made entry of a cask of rum of about 52} gals, which he entered for transportation, marked NB."

"August 5th $3. Mr. Thos. Cook made entry of one hlad of rum for transpor- tation, marked TC. ye was [illegible] same boats and barroll of Rum for Thos. Dewey."
