DESCENDANTS OF GEORGE PHELPS, THE EMIGRANT.
George Phelps, sixth child of William of Tewksbury, Eng., b. about 1605; emi- grated to New England. 1630, with his elder brother William and his younger bro. Richard. From Dorch. Rec. we learn that "Jan., 1632, George Phelps with others is to have the great lot of six aeres a piece next to the great lots laid out toward Neponset by Maverick, Warham, Gaylord and Rockwell"; 28 Oet., 1634, George Phelps chosen one of ten men " to order the affairs of the Colony for one year "; 6 May, 1635, George Phelps chosen a freeman. He came to W., prob. with the first emigration from Dorchester, fall of 1695, and located at junetion of the Farmington and Conn. rivers, on second lot south of the Loomis property. Ile m. John Strong, Jr. Mr. Clark was the s. of one of 3 bros., William, Thomas, or George, of whom Harris says: " These three bro's were in Dorchester in 1630, where they d. soon and nearly at the same time. \ gravestone was erected to their memory with this inscription :
. Here lie three Clarkes; their accounts are even, Entered on earth and carried up to Heaven. 1"
She m. (2) 1638 or 9. Thomas Dewey, who came from Sandwich, Kent, England, to Dorchester, 1633, and to W. 1638, where he d. 27 Mch., 1648, leaving 5 ch ; his wid. m. (3) Mr. Phelps, as above, and, with him and her own children, rem. to Westfield, Mass., where she d. 27 Sept., 1690 - West. Rec.) His removal from W. to Westfield was probably about 1670.
George Phelps' public services seem to have been performed chiefly on the jury, both in Hartford and in Springfield. I did not find his name among the church records, nor in the Book of Town Acts of Westfield. In the county land records in Springfield, beginning in 1613, I found his name in the index of Vol. A. among the grantors, and on page 110 is a deed, from which we give the following rxtracts :
" This present writing made the second of Aprill one thousand six hundred righty seaven in the third yeare of our Soveraign Lord King James the second Betwerne George Phelps of Westfield in the County of Hampshire in the Collony called the Massachusets with the free will & consent of francis his beloved wife of the one party & John Gun of the Town County & Collony aforesaid of the other party. George Phelps died 8 May. 1687, and so on the 6th of June 1687, Francis Phelps Relict of George Phelps came before John Pynchon "one of his Majesties Counsill." and acknowledged the above Instrument to be her free act, etc. And March 5, 1688, Isaac Phelps and Jedediah Dewey came before the same " ince " and made oath that they saw George Phelps sign, seal, and deliver the same to John Gun above mentioned and that " hee the said George Phelps had a good consideration in land at Windsor of John Gun for it which made the said Phelps free & well satisfied in doing it." He never removed to Windsor, if that were his purpose - and to our sketch of George Phelps, the Emigrant, it only remains to append his will, found on file at Northampton .-- Prob. Tun Rer.), the same day that is given for the death of Frances, wife of George. Whether this be a mistake or a coinci- dence I do not know. W. Town Ree. say Mrs. Ann Phelps d. 30 Aug., 1689. The Wild. Ch. Ree. contain a long relation of the religious experiences of Isaac Phelps.
The Westfield Town Acts are recorded from 18 Dec., 1696. 1 Aleb., 1696, Isaac Phelps was chosen selectman, and, until his death, he held varied offices in West- field. He was town clerk, assessor, surveyor, town treasurer, and school-master. April 9, 1702, "Isaac Phelps agrees with the selectmen to keep school for one year as a scool master for the Town, and to teach to write and read such children as shall be sent to scool and for his satisfaction is to have twenty pounds, at or before the year expires." This duty was considered sufficiently arduons to excuse him from the office of town clerk, which he does not holl again until 1713. He was 64 when, as we judge, he first essayed to teach school, twelve years later he is given the title of Capt. and in 1724, when 86 yrs. old he was chosen town treasurer, and prob. never for one moment felt any temptation to flee to Canada with the funds. The oldest stone, bearing the Phelps name. found in the Westfield cemetery, reads: "CAPT | ISAAC PHELPS | DYED IVNE 2 ANNO | 1725 AGED ST YEAR ! "
The Town Acts of Wstffl. contain many pages written by Isaac Phelps. It is a passing observation of ours, though not borne out by much study, that the ekdlest s. of each family was, in the lith century. taught to write, while his brothers coukl only sign their name with a mark. Old Mr. Wm. Phelps could write, his brother George leaves one record only. "his marke." Isaac, son of George, is the only one of his family whose penmanship I can recall. It is certain that some of the younger sons used a "marke" as primitive as that of the elder George. Capt. Isaac agreed only to teach the children to write and read; but what stories he could, and probably did, add by way of history, descriptions of the old country and com- ments on the growth of the new, and the changes that had taken place in West- field since be first came there ! Joseph 2 (Grorye 1), moved with his father to Westfield, Mass., and after the birth of his first child, or about 1676, he, with his father-in-law, John Porter, Ir., Samuel Grant, Samuel Rockwell, and Thomas Bissell, removed to the E. side of the Great River and were the first settlers of E. W., or what is now So. W. In 1680 he joined his neighbors on the E. side in petitioning the General Assembly for a town organization and church privileges. From the Westfield Rec., indeed, it would appear that John Porter, Ir., Joseph Phelps, and others occupied lands in E. W. previous to this date, but returned to Westfield during the Indian troubles.
