PINNEY. [From documents furnished by Mr. W. W. PINNEY of Unionville, Conn., and Mrs. A. O. PINNEY of Colebrook, Conn., we add the following to the Pinney Genealogy. ] This gives the date of Humphrey Pinney's arrival at Boston as 14 May, 1634, and of his removal to W. as 1639, instead of 1635, as given on page 610. It also states that a copy of the original will of John, the gt .- gt .- gd .- father of Humphrey P. was found in Eng. by the late Mr. HENRY BRIGHT of Northampton; also that Humphrey retained for some time after his coming to America the lease of Montague Manor, Broadway, Eng., and received the rents therefrom; also that Humphrey Pinney's will is dated 3d June, 1682; witnessed by Abraham Randall and G. Hull, the testator making his mark G. By this will he gave one-third of his land " over the Great River" to his s. Samuel, and 5 acres more next to Sarah Gaylord; to his s. At a special town meeting of the Town of Windsor it was voted to give my gt .- gt .- grandfather, Captain Abraham Pinney, a tract of land in what is now a part of Bloomfield, Conn., standing at a point a little south of the old place occupied by Rockwell Hoskins, running east one-mile, then north across ( Little Rirer) Farmington River tuo miles; then west one mile, then south across (Little River) Farmington River to place of beginning: provided he would build a house and cultivate a cer- tain number of acres of land, which he did; the cellar is still in plain view, the house having been removed a few years ago.

mile south of the house of Rockwell Hoskins; that was the most elegant house in those parts, being a large two-story and attic, well finished inside, having the front rooms paneled from top to bottom, with a fine oldl stairway in the front hall; and a large beaufet stood in the front parlor, now in my possession. All the hinges, nails, and iron used was made in the Old Newgate Prison, in Copper Hill, Granby, Conn. This house is still standing, in fair repair. - Letter of W. W. Pinney.

Pt. 18 Jan., 1796 (s. of a seafaring m.n, who d. at sea); m. 19 Jan., 1817 (the day after he became of age), Esther (dan. of Elisha) Niles, of Chatham, Ct .; about two years after, went with a party of carpenters to work at Savannah, Ga .; after spending the winter, returned as far as New York, where he and some of his companions shipped for a whaling voyage to the South Seas, or Falkland Islands. The voyage was one of much hardship, aggravated by cruel treatment on the part of the officers of the vessel; finally, the crew mutinied, and Mr. R. and some others deserted and shipped on an English man-of-war, which was soon after captured by a Spanish vessel, the crew imprisoned, etc. Being finally released, he enlisted in the American naval service; afterwards in the mercantile marine. During all his wanderings his family lost all trace of bim, and when after six years, he came into New York harbor, be learned that his wife had married again. For ten years longer he followed the sea; but finally, 4 July, 1835, he revisited his home and found his wife a widow. Her husband, Geo. Evans, of Chatham, Ct., had died in 1831; and, on 9 July, 1835, Mr. Rockwell was re- united to his wife in marriage. Their only child by their first union had died; by the second union they had three sons: (1) Henry Edward, who was killed in the Union service in the Civil Rebellion; (2) Iloratio, d .; (3) Edward Almeron, living at Chatham in 1883 .- [Letter of H. STILES, Mr. Francis, p. 720, line 5. [MIr. JABEZ HI. HAYDEN furnishes the fol- lowing]: HItfd. Co. Mem., Vol. II., 555, 556, and 557, gives the writer's latest views as to the location of the Stileses. The 13 rods which Francis sold in 1644 to Williamn Gaylord, Jr., lay, I think, all north of the north elm in the street row. Gaylord's second wife was a daughter of John Drake, and when the cart-wheel ran over that old gentleman. 1659, he was carried into his daughter's house. You know "the cattle were scared against John Griffin's house " (the Francis Stiles house). Ilenry Stiles' lot was not to the south of Francis, but next north of Gaylord, and extended 42 rods to the Ferry Road; then came Eggleston, 10 rods; and the 10 rods next north, Jolin Bissell bo't of a Hartford (?) man " which was formerly Thomas Stiles." John Stiles' lot was south of Francis'. I think the fact that Francis Stiles' name appears in the list of "dwelling-houses " that "have paid for seats in the meeting- house" in 1859/60 is no evidence that Francis was living in Windsor at that time. 1 have been accustomed to think that these seats were put in in 1659/60, but I have been comparing all the authorities I have at hand, as to your list of those houses which are named as having been paid, and I think the parties named were living here when the seats were put in. More than twenty-five of them had died or re- moved after 1647 and before 1660. About a dozen of them are supposed to have come here between 1641 and 1647, and three others marked 1648 may have been: for instance, William Hayden; 1645 was the first year he owned a house in Wind. sor, so I think the seats were put in and paid for by those who used them before Francis Stiles removed, 1647; and I know of no evidence that he ever returned to Windsor after 1647. The meeting-house was built by a tax on the Grand List. The seats were paid by Poll Tax; but, like the regular tax, seem to pertain to the real estate not to be paid again; but page 151: "Those that be seated and never paid [are now, 1659/60] to make payment to Mr. Buell for work about the house," etc.
Saltonstall Park. Page 736-741, Vol. I. [Mr. JABEZ H. HAYDEN, under date of Nov. 17, 1891, gives us some later views as to the location of this park]:
" I have, by accident, fallen on what long searches have heretofore failed to dis- cover, viz .: the 1500-acre lot which Francis Stiles sold to Robert Saltonstall. As 1 could find it nowhere else, and Massachusetts gave Saltonstall 500 acres, I con- cluded that it was included in Saltonstall's 2000-acre park. There was a great difli. culty in getting Stiles' lot, in its original shape, into a parallelogram, it being at one end 60 rods, at the other 444. I have little doubt (though I don't crow again until I get out of the woods) that I shall bring it to bay a little north of the Seantic. I expect to find the general course of the fences at right angles with the river; and continuing at right angles north of Seantie, the lines will hear more to the north, necessitating just such a shaped lot as Stiles's,- 60 rods on the Great River, and at the end of three miles the lot was 444 rods.
" When Saltonstall disposed of Stiles's land, it was not put on record. Ile had once mortgaged it, the day he bought it, to Edward Hopkins and Mary Wills, but no release appears. But when Josiah Ellsworth purchased 'land that was formerly Francis Stiles', and then from him to Robert Salkinston, then purchased by Master [Nicholas] Davison, and now made over to Josiah Ellsworth by Joanna Davison, the widow and relict and sole executrix,' the 1,500 acres was included. This was Mch. 31, 1665, eighteen years after Stiles sold it."
