ROMA EXTRACT CO .- 97-99 Cross St., Boston. Three childhood friends Joseph Graceffa, Vincenzo Contrino, Luigi Contrino, all born in Aragona, Agrigenti, Italy. Came to U. S. in 1906, settling in Boston. In 1920 they founded the Roma Extract Co., which in 1923 was awarded a diploma with gold medal at the Rome Fair. The firm occupies a five story building on 97-99 Cross St., opposite Sumner Tunnel, in Boston, manufacturing flavoring extracts for liquors and cordials, specializing in the cure of spoiled wines, and making extracts to make wines. It also has a modern enological laboratory. The firm is the first and largest of its kind in New England. In 1938 a wholesale grocery dept., was added.

Came to U. S. in 1907. Was in the contracting business for 20 years and took part in reconstructing over 50 houses after the big Chelsea fire. In the hardware business since 1926. Married Olimpia Pasquale of Revere, June 14, 1914. Children: Clara, secretary to her father; Elba, former dressmaker, married to Henry Chamberlain; Mario, attended Northeastern University, a civil engineer, is first Lt. in U. S. Army Air Corps and in- structor in U. S. Air Corps; Olga, is secretary at Ration Board; all are graduates of Revere High School; and Anthony, student at Boston Latin School, is member of school's symphony orchestra. Mr. Romano is mem- ber and former treasurer, Order Sons of Italy; and pres. of San Giuseppe di Lapio Society. Active in civic, welfare, and political affairs. ROMANO, BIAGIO-Businessman. Born Lapio, Avellino, Italy, July, 1880. Son of Angelo and Caterina Romano. Came to America in 1900, settling in Fitchburg, where he engaged in grocery business for 35 years. Died in 1938. Was among the pioneer Italian American businessmen in Fitchburg and one of the most prominent in the Italian colony. Was mar- ried to Carmela Castello of Pescopennatro, Campobasso, Italy, May 8, 1905. Children: Mary, a graduate of Fitchburg High and Bay Path In- stitute of Springfield, married to Raymond Malo of Leominster, Nov. 3, 1942, who has been in U. S. Navy since 1919, now chief warrant officer. One daughter, Irene. Mr. Romano's other children are Louis, a graduate of Rensselaer Politechnic Institute, in charge of father's store; Jennette, married to John Sullivan; Armand and William, veterans U. S. Army. In 1904 he returned to Italy, where he studied architectural engineering in Naples for three years. In business in Fitchburg since 1908. From 1918-21, he was employed as general in- spector by U. S. Government in Washington, D. C. Married Pasqualina Zarrelli, Sept. 25, 1907. Children: Catello, associated with his father; Nicholas, a general contractor in Leominster; Mary; Frank, Jr., Lt. in U. He is also in charge of the Italian Mission of Revere which he founded in 1937. Rev. Romolo has been active in newspaper work. Former editor of his paper "The Awakening" for a year and has contributed numerous articles to newspapers and magazines. Author of short stories. Lecturer. Attended Suffolk Law School for three years. Instructor of Italian at Boston University. Member and former secretary of the Boston Italian Ministerial Ass'n and member of Congregational Club of Massachusetts. Married Concetta Mottola in 1912. Wealtch Co .; Aura Louise, graduate of Winchester English High; Louis H., a graduate of Winchester English High, is man- ager of the N. H. Wealtch Co., of Keene, N. H., married to Alice E. His father who came to U. S. in 1872 was among the pioneer Italian settlers in Boston, where he engaged as cabinet maker. RONDINA, JOHN ANTHONY - Foreman, delivery section of Boston Back Bay Post Office. Born Cambridge, June 24, 1882. Son of Joseph Rondina and Aurora Dalli. Graduated from Cambridge High School in 1901 and attended Boston College. Entered the service of Boston Post Office, as substitute in 1907; appointed clerk in 1910; and foreman since 1922. Married Catherine Alice Conlin of Somerville, Aug. 15, 1909. Chil- dren: John Anthony, attended Boston College, now in Postal Service; Kenneth Louis, U. S. Army; Harold Edmund, U. S. Army; and Thomas William, also U. S. Army. Mr. Rondina is among the pioneer Italian Americans to enter the Boston P. O. Member: Postal Supervisors Ass'n. Fond of football, baseball, travel and grand opera. His parents were. natives of Ponte Allagna, Lucca, Italy. Came to America in 1872. Res .: 40 Simpson Ave., Somerville.


ROSA, ALBERT ULYSSES-Attorney at Law. Born Taurasi, Avellino, Italy, June 20, 1908. Son of Antonio Rosa and Maria Memmolo. Brought to America in 1910, settling in East Boston. Graduated from E. Boston High School in 1925. Attended Harvard University School of Engineer- ing. Graduated from Suffolk School of Law in 1932, L.L.B. (cum laude). In general practice in East Boston since 1932. Married Aug. 19,1939 to Helen Chase Sargent of Stratton, Maine, a graduate of Farmington Normal School and of Peter Bent Brigham School of Medicine. Also proprietor of the Rosa Restaurant of North Adams, which is being managed by the third brother, Gilio. Mr. Rosa served in U. S. Army during World War I. Married Millie Virginia Paterno, Sept. 14, 1931. One son, George John Jr., born Aug. 10, 1934. Member: American Legion. Parents visited U. S. A. in 1921, now in Italy. Educated in the public schools of his native town. Came to America in 1913, settling in Pittsfield. Served in U. S. Army World War I. In restaurant business with his other two brothers, George and Gilio since 1920. Married Marie Bondi of Pittsfield, Nov. 11, 1929. Children: Barbara Ann and Joan Arlene. Member: American Legion (past commander of Lee Post), and Elks. Former Berkshire County bowling champion. A lover of travelling and music. Parents visited America in 1921. They had the following children: Gino, George, Gilio, Pierina and Amelia. Res .: 43 Gordon St., Pittsfield.
