Fond of golf, travel, art, and music. His father came to U. S. in 1911, settling in Boston, in the restaur- ant business. SASSONE, JOSEPH A .- Proprietor, Sassone's Italian Kitchen, 103 Main St., Gloucester, also affiliated wtih Sassone's Spaghetteria of Salem and former proprietor of Sassone's Spaghetteria of Lynn. Born Armento, Potenza, Italy, April 28, 1901. Son of Paolo Sassone and Maria Ierardi. Came to America in 1906, settled in Boston, later in Lynn, since 1944, in Gloucester. Member of several organizations and fond of all sports. His father, who came to America in 1902, settled in Boston. Had following children: Philip, Vincent, Paul (U. S. Army) Rose and Josephine. Mr. Sassone's restaurant is one of the finest in Gloucester. He was for several years agent of the Metropolitan Life Ins. Co. Res: 24 Birch St., Lynn.


SATERIALE, EMILIO-Custom presser, 20 Hawly St., Boston. Born Campanarello, Avellino, Italy, Feb. 16, 1892. Son of Ciriaco Sateriale and Clementina Addonizio. Attended public school in Italy. Came to U. S. in 1910, settling in Cambridge. In business since 1920. Married Maria Cocca of East Boston, Dec. 19, 1921. Children: Waldo Charles, graduate Cambridge Latin High, is in U. S. Army, 9th Air Force, overseas; Gilda, graduate Cambridge High, and Regis College in 1945, A.B., (scholarship), also studied piano and accordion for ten years, and Emil Gino, student. Mr. Sateriale is member Order Sons of Italy and Cambridge Italian American Citizens Club. Fond of travel and music. His father came to U. S. in 1895, later returned to Italy. SAVARESE, VINCENZO-Proprietor, G. Savarese & Son Inc., 386-390 Commercial St., Boston. Born Vico Equense Naples, Italy, Oct. 16, 1881. Son of Giuseppe Savarese and Maria Concetta Di Martini. Educated in the elementary and High Schools of his native town, where he also learned the trade of cheese making. Came to U. S. in 1901, and worked in New York state, where he made the first ricotta cheese in the U. S. In the manufacturing of Italian cheese of various types in Boston since 1902, beginning in a small way, today he is the largest in the state, also importers of Italian Specialties since 1904. Married Maria Michelina Sacco of Boston, Aug. 7, 1927. Children: Vincent Jr., born June 7, 1928; Maria C., born Nov. 30, 1929, and Joseph, born June 27, 1936. Mr. Savarese's father came to U. S. in 1913, settling in Charlestown. In the general contracting business since 1918. Married Maria Quarantiello of Revere, Feb. 22, 1925. Children: Nicoletta; Ferdi- nand, student of Chelsea High, where he is member of varsity football team; Rosa; Louise and Lorraine (twins), and Mary Ann. Mr. Savignano is member of Loyal Order of Moose. Fond of outdoor life, lover of travel and grand opera. His father, who came to U. S. in 1905, lived in Charles- town. SAWTELLE, JOHN J .- Executive Businessman, Organizer and member of Governor's Council. Born Boston, June 18, 1894. Son of Vincent Sawtelle and Mary LaBarbera. Graduated from Dorchester High School. Married Christine C. Sullivan of Boston, July 16, 1915. Children: Mrs. Mildred Cowan; Audrey, Jeanne, John, disabled veteran; William, and Robert, veterans U. S. Navy. Mr. Sawtelle was the organizer and first president of American Ass'n for recognition of Irish Republic and the first to advocate discontinuance of shipments of scrap metals and oils to Japan. Was the leading spirit in the fight to increase China's lend lease and in the successful listing of enemy alien fishing bases. With Congressman McCormick, he led the fight which resulted in removing alien ban in concentration camps and ban on foreign language news- papers. In 1940 led the New England Pan-American Mission in Wash- ington, resulting in better trade relationship between the South America's and U. S. industries. Mr. Sawtelle is an outstanding champion for the treatment of disabled and mentally incapacitated Veterans of World War II. He was in charge of Madame Chiang Kai-Shek's reception in Boston. First American of Italian descent in the country elected to the Governer's Council, receiving highest number of votes. Active on many governor's council committees, especially the committee on naval and military affairs. Member: Inter-city club of Mass. Inc., its organizer and honorary president; Fitzgerald Post V.F.W .; United American Vet- erans; Italian American Associates of Roxbury; American Aid Society, St. Augustine Court M.C.O.F .; K. of C. In the service of clerk of courts since 1937, being the first American of Italian descent employed at Worcester clerk of courts. Formerly with Brewer Laboratories. Miss Savino is secretary of local ladies lodge Sons of Italy since 1938, secretary of Sacred Heart Sodality, and Italo American defense commit- tee. Member of Italian American citizens' league. Active in civic and church affairs. Fond of basketball, tennis, reading and music. Her father was born in Grumo Appula, Bari, Italy. Came to America in 1908, settling in Worcester. Had following children: Antoinette E .; Frank J., in U. S. Army; Rocco S., musician, now in U. S. Army Air Corps, and Isadore T., in U. S. Army. Res .: 53 E. Central St, Worcester.

SAVINO, NICHOLAS ANGELO-Proprietor, Savino Bros. Monument Co., 37 Wahconah St., Pittsfield. Born Bovino, Foggia, Italy, Sept. 29, 1888. Son of Vincenzo Paolo Savino and Filomena Tavano. Came to U. S. in 1895. Educated in Milford public schools and learned stone cutting. trade from his father. Later became professional musician for 10 years, leader of his own band, considered outstanding and toured New England states. Was manager for May Tag Co. for number of years. In 1931 he settled in Pittsfield, where he has since been in monumental works busi- ness. Married Anna Maria di Vittoria of Milford, Oct. 5, 1909. Children: Vincent Paul, Ettore Americo and Alfred Nicholas, all of whom grad- uated from Milford High School and are musicians. Mr. Savino is mem- ber of Elks. Hobby playing guitar, saxophone, and trombone. His father came to America in 1892. Was a stone cutter here and abroad for 50 years. Had following children: Nicholas A .; Louis of Uxbridge; Vincent P. Children: Lucy, graduate of Dean Academy; Mary Jane and Rose Anne are students. Mr. Scamporino served in U. S. Army, World War I. Member: American Legion, Baccuso Post, Elks, Order Sons of Italy. His father was postoffice clerk in Italy for 20 years. Came to America in 1909, settling in Haverhill in 1912, where he engaged in mfg. tomato paste and other canned goods. SCANDONE, PETER ANTHONY-Bandmaster. Born Bagnoli Irpino, Avellino, Italy, Feb. 6, 1886. Son of Alfonso Scandone and Madalena Di Stasio. Came to U. S. in 1900, settling in East Boston. Graduated from the New England Conservatory of Music, where he also completed the required course for Master of Bands and Orchestras, comprising a com- plete technical study of all band and orchestra instruments. In 1907 he founded the N. E. School of Music and has since been its director. Has organized numerous bands which have won state-wide recognition. Connected with Division of Indus- trial Safety-Department of Labor and Industries since 1917, being the first Italo-American in Mass. to occupy said position.
