Came to America in 1902 settling in Swampscott, where he has since been in the contracting business. Mar- ried Fiorinda Chiancone of Swampscott, Jan. 16, 1912. Children: Joseph, in U. S. Navy seabees; Louise, graduate of Burdett College; Alfonse, graduate of Northeastern University in architecture and in engineering, is patent maker; Nancy, defense worker; Louis, in U. S. Was official inter- preter in the British Hdq. at Milan, Italy. Came to America in 1920 settling in Boston, where he has since been engaged as translator of romance lan- guages, as foreign trade counsellor. Has also taught Italian in the Boston High Schools and directed dramatic plays for many years. Married Mar- guerite Reppucci of Boston, Sept. 6, 1926 (a former employee of the 1st Natl. Bank and a volunteer social worker)., Children: Elena and Thomas. Mr. Gallozzi is member of American Legion and Order Sons of Italy. His father, a native of Rome, Italy, studied in Austria, became one of the leading tenors of his time. He sang at La Scala of Milan, at San Carlo in Naples, throughout Europe and U. S. Was for number of years business agent for A. F. of L. under whose aus- pices he organized several unions. Has been a prominent figure among his people in Worcester, and active in civic affairs. Served in the American forces during World War I. Member of his high school baseball team. He also played football, basketball and hockey. Played for six years in the Twilight League. Came to America in 1890 settling in Hartford, later in Mass., where he engaged as immigration inspector for over 30 years. Was most outstanding in that field. Selected by the U. GARDA, THOMAS (late)-Thomas Garda & Son cattle dealer, Taunton. Born Valestura, Alessandria, Italy. Served in the Italian Tripolitania War and worked in France for four years. In 1912 he married Melina Ramponi of his native town. Came to America the same year settling in Taunton, where he operated a grocery and variety store in his Italian district for over 20 years. He also built his cattle business, which was among the finest and most modern air conditioned cattle barns in the state, accommodating over 20 cows electrically operated. He was charter member of the Italian Social Club and one of the most outstanding Italo-Americans in Taunton, who took deep interest in the welfare of his people. Died Feb. 20, 1944. Had two children: Louis, who operates the farm and cattle business, is married and has three children; and Laura, married to Attorney Peter B. Gay, is in charge of the grocery and variety business. Was the first Italian settler of Natick in 1880, where he started in the fruit business in small way, it grew to be the largest fruit and produce business in the town, on same location on Main St. for 38 years. He was charter member of Colombo Society and took active part in civic and welfare of his community. In 1874 he married Rose Dondero of Boston, had the following children: late John, proprietor of Gardella Drug Store of Milford for 40 years, was chair- man of board of selectmen and one of Milford's most outstanding citizens; Anthony, was associated with his father, is in fruit business in Milford; Jerry (see his sketch in this book); late Anne, an invalid for 50 years was an unusual brilliant scholar; Genevieve, married John M. Staveley, a civil engineer, whose daughter Barbara graduated from Chandler Secretarial School; Adelina, married the late Daniel Coleman, wholesale confectionery dealer of Natick; Louise Natalie (operator of Lou-Ann Specialty Shop of Natick) is married to F. T. Gaghan of Milford whose son is a graduate of Northeastern University. Mr. Gardella's father was a Garibaldian soldier who fought for Italian independence, a descendant of ancient and honorable ancestors.

He plays the French horn and has been member of the Sagamore Band and of Agawam Band. A lover of sym- phonies and grand operas, has heard most of the world's greatest singers including Caruso, Martinelli, Scotti, Gigli, Sallicurci De Luca. One daughter, Geralyn, born June 11, 1945. Mr. Gargiullo is active in civic affairs. Fond of football, fishing, swim- ming and travel. His father was born in Risina, Naples, Italy, came to U. S. in 1902, settling in Boston, later in Cambridge as tonsorialist. Has following children: Edward: Gerald M .; Vincent, veteran, captain U. S. Army, World War II, in Europe, took part in invasions of Italy and France, married to Concetta Serafina; Ann; Charles, veteran U. S. Came to America in 1908 settling in Ludlow, where he frequented the evening school. Served in U. S. Army during World War I. In package store business in Ludlow since 1924. Married Silvia Morgavio Dec. 2, 1920. Children: John Francis, a graduate of Ludlow High School, Wilbraham Academy, and Harvard University, pre-medical, now serving in U. S. GAROFANO, TONY A .- Legislator and Civic Leader. Born Montemi- letto, Avellino, Italy, May 28, 1885. Son of Francesco Garofano and Con- cetta Pizzano. Came to America in 1886. Educated in Boston Public Schools. In the barber business in Lynn since 1896. Pioneer Italian Amer- ican tonsorialist in the city. Was elected member of Mass. State Legisla- ture in 1920 and served 13 years. From 1935-40 he served as chairman Barber Board Commissioner. In Legislature he was one of the most active members, sponsoring 21 legislative bills and three resolves, all of which became law. Is also credited with being responsible for widening and illumination of Salem Turnpike and in naming the Old Pine River Bridge to the new General Lee Edwards Memorial Bridge. Honorary member of Post Six, Y. D. and V. F. W .; on Board of Directors of Saugus Trust Co .; on Board of Directors of Infantile Paralysis; on staff of local American Relief for Italy; is a former exhibition dancer, bicycle rider, and a runner. Member of Eagles; K. C., and Elks. Is called "A man of the people." Al- ways ready to offer his services to every worthy cause.
